Practical Tips
Haemorrhoids can be difficult to live with. Follow these simple tips to help treat piles, and avoid developing them.
Stay hydrated - one of the main risk factors in developing haemorrhoids is excess pushing on the toilet. Conditions such as constipation can make you more likely to develop piles. Staying hydrated and eating more fibre in your diet can keep you regular. Caffeine from tea or soft drinks can cause further irritation.
Keep your piles clean - due to the presence of faeces, infected piles can be a risk. Wipe with soft, wet toilet paper or flushable wipes where possible, and take a warm bath to help keep it clean and deal with itching.
Don’t scratch - scratching any area of your skin can cause damage; an area as delicate as a swollen blood vessel doubly so. Scratching may lead to damage and allow the pile to become infected; where possible, use a warm bath or soothing creams or ointments to reduce the itch.
Don’t ignore the urge to go - if you need to use the toilet, don’t wait. Holding it in can cause further irritation and pain.

FAQ
How does Care Haemorrhoid Ointment work?
This product contains two active ingredients; lidocaine and allantoin. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic that blocks pain signals, while allantoin has a moisturising effect and promotes healing processes.
What causes haemorrhoids?
The exact cause of haemorrhoids is not known. It seems to be related to increased blood pressure around your anus. This causes the blood vessels in the area to enlarge, becoming inflamed.
Haemorrhoids can be external, on the outside area of the anus, or internal, within the anal canal.
There are many factors which are linked to developing haemorrhoids, including;
- Straining too much on the toilet; this may be due to constipation or chronic diarrhoea
- Being obese or overweight
- Ageing
