You will receive your results via email. This will include a COVID certificate of your results to use whilst travelling to other countries, sometimes called a ‘fit to fly certificate’. You can choose to have your passport details added to the certificate when you register your kit online.

You can use this home COVID test as a pre-departure test but please be aware of how long the results can take to be returned. If you use the Randox Drop Box return method, you will receive your results the next day (up to 11:59pm) via email. If you are using an alternative courier such as DX, you will receive your result within 12-24 hours of sample receipt at the laboratory in Northern Ireland. The test is a PCR test which is the golden standard test used by the NHS to test people with symptoms. If you need a negative test to enter a different country, the UK government suggests that you use a COVID test privately rather than an NHS test. The NHS test and trace service cannot provide you with the necessary documents for travel.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms like a cough, high temperature or loss of sense of smell or taste, you should get tested for the virus.

How does this test work?

Your private COVID test kit will be delivered to your address and contain all the relevant instructions for taking the test. Each kit contains a swab that you can use to collect a sample from your nose and mouth. 

This sample is then sent to our affiliated lab who test to look for the presence of coronavirus. You will receive your test results for COVID via email within 24 to 48 hours of the lab receiving the sample. This email will contain a Coronavirus certificate of your results.

This is a COVID-19 PCR test, which is different to another type of test called a rapid flow test. This testing service is to see whether you currently have Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is not another type of test called an antibody test.

How do I take the test?

This is a swab test kit. The kit will provide full instructions for taking the test. Gently rub the swab over both tonsils and the back of the throat. You should do this carefully to avoid touching your teeth, tongue, or gums. 

Then, take the swab and gently insert it into your nostril until you feel some resistance. Rotate the swab 5 times in the nostril and then repeat this step in your other nostril. After removing the swab, you should place it into the collection tube straight away. You can watch this video for more detailed instructions.

Once you have taken your sample, it needs to arrive at the lab within 70 hours.

How do I send my sample to the lab?

We have partnered with Randox to provide these private tests. To send your sample to the Randox lab, see the guide on their website. The preferred method is to return the sample via a free Randox Drop Box. You can see a map of official drop boxes at the above link.

Randox Drop Boxes are open 7 days a week to accept samples. There is no need to book your sample drop online or call to say your sample has been dropped off. All samples are collected each day at the specified Drop Box closing times.

If you aren’t near a Randox drop box you can also use a DX drop box. If you want to use this method, please contact DX on 0333 2415100 to enquire where your closest DX location is to collect your returns labels.

You will receive an email when your sample has been scanned into the lab to begin testing.

How long will it take to get my COVID-19 test results?

When you get your kit, you need to register it online at this link. Enter your URN number as it appears on all of your paperwork. You should receive an email confirming your registration was successful. If you don’t register your kit you may not receive your test results.
