Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a very common problem among men and can cause relationship problems and confidence issues. One of the most common treatments, Viagra, is becoming more accessible through online prescribing and over the counter purchases at pharmacies. This can be effective at improving erections, but many men have questions about Viagra. In this post, we look at what you can expect when you take Viagra for the first time.
Is Viagra safe?
Viagra was first approved in the UK almost 24 years ago to treat ED. Since then, it has been used extensively to help men with erectile dysfunction worldwide. The over the counter version, Viagra Connect, was launched in the UK in 2017 and over 1 million men are estimated to have used it. The active ingredient in Viagra is sildenafil.
Viagra is a generally safe drug that most men with erectile dysfunction can take. It’s manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the active ingredient, Sildenafil, has undergone many clinical trials to make sure it’s safe to use.
However, it can’t be used by everyone. It shouldn’t be used by men with serious heart problems, a recent stroke, or men taking medicines called nitrates for chest pain. You can find more information in the patient information leaflet.
Like any medicine, Viagra can cause side effects. The most common side effect is a headache. More than 1 in 10 men taking Viagra could experience this side effect. Other common side effects include dizziness, flushing, nausea, and a stuffy nose.
What happens when you take Viagra for the first time?
When you take Viagra for the first time, it generally takes around 30 to 60 minutes to start working. It can take longer if you have a meal before taking the dose. Viagra only works if you’re sexually aroused and it can improve erections for up to 4 hours after taking a dose.
After you take the tablet, it’s absorbed in the stomach and then begins to relax the blood vessels in your penis. This increases blood flow into the penis when you become aroused, which leads to harder and longer-lasting erections.

How much Viagra should I take the first time?
Viagra is available in 3 strengths: 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. The recommended dose when starting Viagra is 50mg taken approximately one hour before sex or sexual activity.
A clinical study found that 82% of men taking 50mg of Viagra had an erection within 45 minutes of taking a dose. You can only take one Viagra tablet per day. Never take more than one dose per day.
You should see how your body reacts to the Viagra after taking the dose. If you experience mild side effects, you can try Viagra 25mg to see if that strength suits you better. If you find that Viagra 50mg isn’t effective at improving your erections, your doctor may increase your dose to 100mg.
Men with severe kidney disease are usually prescribed 25mg when taking Viagra for the first time. This is also the case for men with liver disease. This can be increased by your doctor to 50mg and then 100mg if it’s safe to do so.
Does Viagra work the first time you take it?
Unfortunately, Viagra doesn’t work for everyone the first time they take it. It’s recommended to try Viagra on at least 4 different occasions before concluding that it doesn’t work for you. For some people, it can take several doses (on different occasions) before Viagra works for them.
There are some reasons that it may not be working for you. You need to be sexually aroused for Viagra to work and it will not improve erections unless you’re sexually stimulated. Taking Viagra with a heavy meal can make it take longer to work, and drinking alcohol may make it more difficult to get an erection with Viagra. It’s best to take the dose on an empty stomach.
Another reason is that the dose isn’t high enough to be effective for you. If you’re taking the 25mg strength, you can try the 50mg strength to see if this is better for you. For men taking the 50mg strength, trying the 100mg next time may be a better ED treatment.
If you think Viagra isn’t effective for you, there are several other ED medications you can try such as tadalafil, vardenafil and Spedra.
