Practical Tips

Athlete’s foot can be a recurring problem - following these simple tips can help prevent contracting athlete's foot, and help keep your symptoms under control;

Dry your feet - after washing, dab your feet dry, particularly between the toes. Rubbing may cause damage to the skin, which can provide an opportunity for the fungus to breed.
Use a different towel - if you find your athlete’s foot is a recurring problem, you may be transferring fungal spores from other areas of your body to your feet, or vice versa. Use a separate towel for your feet, making sure to clean it regularly.
Take your shoes off at home - the fungus that causes athlete’s foot breeds in warm, moist environments. Continuing to wear your shoes indoors can make your feet sweaty, which will encourage the fungus to breathe. Be careful to keep your socks on, as you may spread the fungus to others if they come into contact with areas your bare feet have touched.
Wear clean socks - as stated above, the fungus that causes athlete’s foot grows in warm, moist areas. Wearing the same socks multiple days can provide a perfect place for the fungus to grow, allowing it to transfer to your toes easily.

FAQ

What is athlete’s foot?

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal infection of the skin. As the name suggests, athlete’s foot only appears on the feet (often both, but not always). One of the main symptoms of athlete's foot is itchy white patches of skin between your toes. These patches can also appear on the instep, heel and sole of the foot.

The most common symptoms are itching and burning sensations, along with cracking or scaling of the skin; however, it is also possible to see mild swelling, blisters, or weeping ulcers.

The most common method of contracting athlete’s foot involves stepping in the same places as someone with the infection with bare feet - for instance, in changing rooms or swimming pools. It can also happen when your feet are wet or sweaty for extended periods, especially if you wear wet or sweaty socks for extended periods.
