Practical Tips

Cystitis is a fairly common, minor infection. It can, however, be painful and difficult to live with, and in some cases can be a recurrent problem. Follow these simple tips to help treat and prevent cystitis;

Painkillers - the best option to treat the pain of cystitis is paracetamol. Take up to 4 doses per day to keep the pain manageable. For children, liquid paracetamol (such as Calpol) will work.

Heat - a hot water bottle held against your stomach can help with reducing the inflammation and some minor pain relief.

Avoid sex - sex can lead to further irritation of the bladder, from both friction and pressure. If possible, wait until you are fully recovered before having sex again. Once you are sexually active, make sure to pee as soon as possible after sex to help prevent recurring cystitis.

Watch what you drink - staying hydrated can help treat the symptoms of cystitis. While you do take this medication with a glassful of water, ensure you continue to drink throughout the day.However, acidic drinks, such as coffee or fizzy drinks, can cause further irritation.

Shower, rather than bathe - if possible, try showering instead of a bath. This prevents the genitals from being in contact with soap for long periods, avoiding further irritation.

Don’t wait to pee - holding it in too long can lead to irritation. Where possible, pee as frequently as your body tells you it needs to.

FAQ

How does Cystopurin work?

Cystopurin is an alkalising agent - when consumed, it reduces the level of acid in the urine. This allows you to pee without causing further irritation.

How long does it take for Cystopurin to work?

Normally, Cystopurin will take effect the next time you urinate after drinking. Cystitis normally clears up within a week or so without any treatment; Cystopurin can make this shorter by avoiding more irritation, allowing the infection to heal faster.

What is cystitis?

Cystitis is a minor infection, which causes inflammation of the bladder. This can be caused by many different factors, from hygiene to wearing too-tight trouser, but in adults the most common cause is sex. Cystitis is not an STI - however, sex can create the ideal conditions for skin bacteria to accumulate around the urethra, and go on to infect the bladder.

You may receive a course of antibiotics from your doctor to treat the infection; however, this will normally only be given in extreme cases.

Does cranberry juice actually help cystitis?

Cranberry juice is a traditional cure for cystitis. Cranberry juice contains proanthocyanidins, which are thought to help prevent bacteria from sticking to the skin, which can prevent infections. Indeed, there are several studies which show that those who regularly consume cranberry juice are less likely to experience cystitis symptoms.
