About Trimbow Inhaler

Trimbow is a triple therapy inhaler. That means it contains a combination of three different medications. It is used for the treatment of asthma. Trimbow can also be used with a spacer, to make inhalation easier.

What is a Trimbow Inhaler Used For?

Trimbow is used for the treatment of asthma, and is sometimes prescribed for moderate to severe COPD. There are two key subtypes of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Trimbow is used to treat the symptoms of both types.

Beclomethasone binds to corticosteroid receptors, creating powerful anti-inflammatory responses.

Formoterol selectively binds beta-2 adrenergic receptors, which reduces the contraction of bronchioles, allowing air to flow easier through your lungs.

Glycopyrronium bromide competitively blocks muscarinic receptors, preventing them from activating and preventing unconscious muscle from contracting, including in the lungs

How does Trimbow Work?

Trimbow works in three different ways, as it contains three different ingredients: Beclomethasone is a corticosteroid. It helps to reduce inflammation, which can cause breathing difficulties. Formoterol is a type of drug known as a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA). This means that formoterol works by acting on receptors that cause the airways to relax and open. Glycopyrronium bromide is a muscarinic antagonist. This means that it has similar effects to formoterol, but it works by blocking receptors that would cause the airways to narrow. These three medications all help to reduce the symptoms of asthma, making it easier to breathe.

Can you use Trimbow for Asthma?

You can use Trimbow for asthma, although generally it would only be prescribed if you have tried other inhalers containing medications known as LABAs (Formeterol, Salmeterol etc.). If these inhalers and a corticosteroid inhaler are not enough to control your asthma symptoms, Trimbow may be an option for you.

How Long Does it Take for Trimbow to Work?

Trimbow contains different active ingredients, with different effects. The formoterol and glycopyrronium are a type of medication known as bronchodilators. This means that they allow your airways to relax and widen. You should experience these effects within just a few minutes of taking Trimbow. These effects should last for approximately 12 hours, this is why it is usually recommended that you take Trimbow in the morning and the evening. Alongside this, there is also beclometasone, a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids help to prevent your symptoms. It can take 1 to 3 weeks to have any noticeable effects and can take up to 3 months for the beclometasone to have its full effect.

Is Trimbow a Steroid Inhaler?

Trimbow is a combination inhaler containing three different ingredients, one of which is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids help to reduce inflammation, making it easier to breathe. Steroid inhalers, also known as ‘preventer inhalers’, contain only corticosteroids as active ingredients.

Trimbow: How Often Should You Use It?

The recommended dosage for Trimbow is two puffs twice a day. You should take Trimbow at the recommended dose even if you are asymptomatic. This is because Trimbow has both preventative and relieving effects. You should always take Trimbow as directed by your doctor.

When to Take Trimbow?

Usually, the recommended dose would be two puffs in the morning and two in the evening. Your doctor may adjust this to better fit your personal circumstances. You should always take Trimbow as instructed by the prescribing physician. If you have any questions about your dosage, it is best to discuss these with your doctor.

Trimbow: How Many Times a Day is Normal?

Two puffs twice a day are the standard dose for Trimbow. This is also the maximum dosage. If you feel that you need more than this, you should speak to your doctor as another medication may be more suitable for you. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Can you use Trimbow with a Spacer?

Trimbow can be used with a spacer. Spacers can make it much easier to inhale the medication properly and they help to ensure that as much medication reaches your lungs as possible, giving you maximum effect.

How to Use a Trimbow Inhaler

Trimbow may be used with or without a spacer. Please see the instructions below for how to use Trimbow with a spacer.

How to take Trimbow without a spacer:

  • Check the dose counter on the inhaler.
  • Remove the cap from your Trimbow inhaler and check that it is clean and that there is nothing stuck inside.
  • Breathe out slowly and deeply
  • Hold the inhaler upright and insert the mouthpiece into your mouth. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth, but don’t bite down on it. Form a seal around the mouthpiece with your lips.
  • Start to breathe in slowly and deeply. Just after you start inhaling, press down on the canister at the top of the inhaler. Continue breathing in slowly and deeply for about 4-5 seconds. If you have difficulty doing this, you may want to speak to your doctor or asthma nurse about using Trimbow with a spacer.
  • Hold your breath for as long as you can manage, then remove the inhaler from your mouth.
  • Breathe out slowly once you have removed the inhaler from your mouth.
  • Check the dose counter has moved down by one dose.

Repeat the steps above for the second puff.

How to use a Trimbow Inhaler with Spacer

Your asthma nurse or doctor should show you how to use your spacer correctly. There can be some variation between different spacers and medications. Trimbow is inhaled through the tidal breath technique, meaning that you breathe normally, but other medications may require different techniques, so always check with your doctor if you are unsure. The instructions below outline how to use a spacer with Trimbow:

  • Take the cap off your Trimbow inhaler and check that there is no dirt or debris stuck inside.
  • Shake the inhaler vigorously
  • Insert the inhaler into the end of the spacer, making sure the inhaler is facing upright
  • Put the mouthpiece of the spacer into your mouth and create a tight seal around it with your lips
  • Sit or stand up with your back straight and tilt your head back slightly to help the medication reach your lungs
  • Press down on the top of your inhaler to administer the dose
  • Breathe normally through the spacer for about 5 breaths
  • Remove the spacer from your mouth, disconnect your Trimbow inhaler and replace the cap.

Drug Interactions

You should always inform your doctor of any other medications that you are taking. Some medications can interact with Trimbow producing side effects, which may be dangerous. If you are taking beta-blocker medication such as Atenolol or Propranolol, you must let the doctor know, as beta-blockers can have very dangerous interactions with Trimbow and other asthma medications.

Treatment Options

Is Trimbow better than Fostair?

Trimbow and Fostair are very similar medications. Fostair contains two active ingredients: beclometasone and formoterol. Trimbow is a triple therapy inhaler, it contains the same active ingredients as Fostair, but also contains glycopyrronium. Which inhaler is better for you will depend upon your individual circumstances. Trimbow is typically prescribed when a combination inhaler like Fostair is not able to control your symptoms sufficiently.

Trimbow vs Ultibro

There are several differences between Trimbow and Ultibro: Trimbow is a triple therapy inhaler, containing three active ingredients, whereas Ultibro contains only two. Ultibro does not contain a corticosteroid, but Trimbow does. Corticosteroids help to prevent breathing difficulties, by reducing inflammation. Ultibro is a dry powder inhaler, whereas Trimbow is a pressurized metered dose inhaler. This means that Ultibro needs to be inhaled in a short deep breath, whereas Trimbow can be inhaled in slow deep breaths. Trimbow can also be used with a spacer, to make inhalation easier. Your doctor will discuss your options and prescribe the most suitable inhaler based on your individual circumstances.

Trimbow vs Symbicort

Symbicort is a combination inhaler, containing budesonide and formoterol. Trimbow, also contains formoterol, but contains glycopyrronium and beclometasone as well. Trimbow would generally be prescribed if a dual-medication like Symbicort does not sufficiently control your symptoms.

Trimbow vs Seretide

Trimbow and Seretide are both prescribed for the treatment of asthma, however Trimbow contains three active ingredients, whereas Seretide only contains two. This means that Trimbow is generally only prescribed when a dual-therapy inhaler, like Seretide is insufficient.

Trimbow vs Relvar

Relvar contains two active ingredients, whereas Trimbow contains three. For this reason, Trimbow is more likely to be prescribed when two-medication inhalers like Relvar, do not give sufficient control of your symptoms. In addition, Relvar is only available as a dry powder inhaler. This means that it needs to be inhaled in a short deep breath. If you struggle with this inhaler technique, a pressurized metered dose inhaler, such as Trimbow, may be more suitable for you.

How do you know if you have asthma?

If you regularly experience shortness of breath, wheezing, breathlessness and coughing, you may have asthma. Consult a doctor to get a formal diagnosis by answering some questions about your health and performing a breathing test.

Is there a cure for asthma?

No, asthma is a lifelong condition although it will go through periods of improvement and worsening. If you experience asthma symptoms regularly, preventative medicines can be prescribed to manage the condition.

What is the best treatment for asthma?

Asthma is treated according to the severity of the condition and response to each treatment. As such, there isn’t necessarily a best treatment, only the best treatment for each person with their condition at the time. Your doctor should determine this through questions about your asthma symptoms and breathing tests if necessary.

Can I buy asthma inhalers online?

Yes, provided you have previously been diagnosed and treated with the inhaler before, you may buy your asthma inhaler online by consulting a doctor with a UK registered online doctor and pharmacy service.

Can you develop asthma?

If exposed to enough environmental irritants such as cigarette smoke, smog, mould, dust and pollen asthma can begin to develop in otherwise healthy adults. Lung function will generally improve if these triggers are avoided.

Can ibuprofen cause asthma?

Ibuprofen can trigger asthma in about 1 in 5 people with asthma. You should avoid ibuprofen if possible if you find it worsens your asthma.

What is the difference between the different coloured asthma inhalers?

The colour of an asthma inhaler will usually indicate whether it contains a reliever or preventative ingredients. Blue inhalers are used for immediate relief while other coloured inhalers will usually contain medicines used to prevent asthma.
