What is Flixonase?
Flixonase products contain the active ingredient fluticasone propionate. This is a steroid medication and it can be used to reduce swelling and inflammation in the nose. This helps to relieve itching, sneezing and a blocked or runny nose. It can help improve these allergic rhinitis symptoms that can be caused by seasonal allergies (hay fever). The symptoms can also be triggered by other allergies like pet dander and dust.
Two Flixonase products are available: Flixonase Nasal Spray and Flixonase nasules drops. Both contain the same active ingredient.
How does Flixonase work?
The active ingredient, fluticasone, is a corticosteroid. Fluticasone works on your immune system to reduce the symptoms of inflammatory conditions and allergic reactions such as itching, swelling and redness.
Fluticasone works in the nasal passages to reduce mucus and swelling. Although it can take longer than antihistamine nasal sprays to work, the effects usually last longer.
Using Flixonase
The usual starting dose for Flixonase spray is two sprays into each nostril once a day, ideally in the morning. As your symptoms improve, your doctor may ask you to use a lower dose.
The usual starting dose is one single-use plastic container (400 micrograms) divided equally between each nostril, once or twice a day. If your symptoms don’t improve after 4 to 6 weeks, your doctor may switch you to a different medicine.
It can take several days for this medicine to work. You should keep using it every day even though you may not feel better straight away.
Alternatives
Many treatments are available for hay fever and allergies, both over the counter and on prescription. Other steroid nasal sprays include Beconase and Avamys. Some nasal sprays contain antihistamine ingredients such as Rhinolast and Pirinase. Dymista is a product that combines antihistamine and steroid ingredients in one nasal spray.
Several oral medicines can also be taken to improve hay fever and allergies. Examples include desloratadine, fexofenadine, levocetirizine and Telfast.

How to use Flixonase
Nasal Spray
Shake the bottle before taking off the cap and gently blow your nose. Close one nostril with your finger and put the nozzle in the other nostril. Slightly tilt your head forward and keep the bottle upright.
Start to breathe in slowly through your nose and press down firmly on the bottle collar with your fingers. Then breathe out through your mouth. You can repeat these steps for the other nostril. See the patient information leaflet for complete instructions, including diagrams.
Flixonase Nasal Drops
Remove a plastic container from the strip in the box. Flick and shake the container several times to mix the contents well. Hold the bottom tab of the container firmly. Twist and remove the top tab to open it. Put the opened container into one nostril and gently squeeze. Keep squeezing until the sides of the container touch each other. This will mean that about half the dose has been given (about 6 drops). Repeat this step to use the rest in your other nostril.
You will need to position your body correctly to effectively administer the Flixonase drops. See the diagrams in section 3 of the patient information leaflet for further information.
