What is Coversyl Arginine Plus?
Coversyl Arginine Plus is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Sometimes the name is shortened to ‘Coversyl Plus’. It is a branded medicine and contains two active ingredients:
- Perindopril arginine 5mg
- Indapamide 1.25mg
Both ingredients work differently to reduce blood pressure. Perindopril is an ACE inhibitor, whereas indapamide is a diuretic (also known as ‘water tablets’).
Coversyl Plus is different to a similar medicine called Coversyl. Coversyl only contains one ingredient, perindopril.
How does it work?
Perindopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by blocking an enzyme called ACE. This enzyme is responsible for constricting blood vessels and causing a rise in blood pressure.
By blocking this enzyme, perindopril stops it from constricting blood vessels and allows blood vessels to relax and widen. This reduces blood pressure.
Indapamide also reduces blood pressure but in a different way. Diuretics get rid of extra fluid from your body through your kidneys. They make you urinate more and reduce the amount of extra fluid in your body. This reduces blood pressure. Indapamide is a type of diuretic known as a thiazide diuretic.
It is important to try to reduce blood pressure in people diagnosed with high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure for a long period of time, it means your heart has to work harder to pump blood around the body. It can also cause your arteries to stiffen and narrow. This puts extra strain on your heart and arteries to maintain blood flow.
The result of this extra strain means that you are at higher risk of developing serious health conditions like coronary artery disease, heart attacks and strokes. It also puts you at higher risk of kidney disease, heart failure and vascular dementia.
If you have hypertension, taking medication like Coversyl Arginine Plus is important because it reduces your blood pressure and reduces your risk of these serious health problems.
Another way to effectively reduce your blood pressure is to make healthy lifestyle changes. Helpful lifestyle changes include:
- Increasing the amount you exercise (guidelines suggest some type of activity every day)
- Stopping smoking (stop smoking services or treatments can help)
- Limiting alcohol intake to guidelines levels
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet (and limiting the intake of saturated fat)
- Reducing salt intake
- Losing weight if you are obese or overweight
There are no symptoms of hypertension and it is estimated that for every 10 people diagnosed, a further 7 people remain undiagnosed. It is important to check your blood pressure reading regularly to keep an eye on your blood pressure over time. BP monitors are available to purchase for home use.
Dose
The most appropriate dose for you will be decided by your doctor and you should take it exactly as your doctor tells you. The usual starting dose is one tablet of Coversyl Arginine Plus 5mg/1.25mg a day. Ideally, you should take the dose in the morning and before a meal.
Alternatives
Hypertension is a very common medical condition which affects around a third of adults in the UK. There are many medicines that can be used to treat the condition. Different types include:
- Angiotensin-2 receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Beta blockers
- Calcium channel blockers (CCBs)
Different ACE inhibitors include ramipril, captopril and enalapril.
