What is felodipine?
Felodipine is a medicine prescribed to lower blood pressure in people diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also prescribed to prevent chest pain caused by heart disease, called angina.
Felodipine is only available on prescription. It belongs to a family of medicines called calcium channel blockers (CCBs).
How does it work?
Calcium channel blockers act on blood vessels and cause them to widen and relax. Relaxing the blood vessels makes it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body and lowers blood pressure.
Reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure is crucial to prevent future health problems. Over a long period of time, high blood pressure can damage blood vessels and put a strain on the heart. This can lead to a number of serious conditions like strokes, aneurysms, kidney disease, and heart attacks.
Taking medicine like felodipine to reduce blood pressure helps to protect against the increased risk of developing these problems.
There are lifestyle changes you can make to help reduce your blood pressure. Examples include regularly exercising, stopping smoking, reducing the amount of salt you eat, and losing weight if overweight. At Simple Online Pharmacy, we offer treatments to aid weight loss and stop smoking.
There are no symptoms with hypertension. To be diagnosed with high blood pressure you need to have your blood pressure checked. BP monitors give a blood pressure reading of both the systolic and diastolic pressures. The diastolic pressure measures the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels and the systolic pressure measures how much force your heart pumps blood around the body with.
Felodipine is available as modified-release tablets. This means the medicine is released in your body gradually. Three strengths are available: 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10mg.
The usual starting felodipine dose is 5mg once daily in the morning. The dose may be increased gradually but the usual maximum dose is 20mg once daily. In elderly patients, the starting dose is 2.5mg once daily.

Hypertension is very common and various types of medicines exist to lower blood pressure such as:
- Angiotensin-2 receptor antagonists (ARBs)
- Calcium-channel blockers (CCBs)
- Diuretics and thiazide diuretics
- Beta blockers
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
Amlodipine, lercanidipine, nifedipine and diltiazem are examples of other CCBs.
Is felodipine a diuretic or an ACE inhibitor?
It is not a diuretic or an ACE inhibitor. Felodipine is a calcium channel blocker (CCB).
What is felodipine used for?
What are the side effects of felodipine?
Common side effects include:
- Ankle swelling
- Abdominal pain
For a full list of side effects, consult the patient information leaflet.
Can felodipine cause weight gain?
Weight gain is not listed as an adverse effect of felodipine.
Which is better, amlodipine or felodipine?
Both amlodipine and felodipine are effective at lowering blood pressure. Both can be used to treat hypertension and prevent angina and both are taken once daily. Which is better will be different for different people.
When should felodipine be taken?
It is best taken in the morning. It can be taken either on an empty stomach or with a light meal low in fat or carbohydrate. You should not crush, chew or divide the tablets.
Can I drink alcohol with felodipine?
Yes, you can take felodipine and drink alcohol. Taking blood pressure medicines and drinking too much alcohol can cause your blood pressure to lower too much and make you feel lightheaded and dizzy. If this happens when you drink alcohol, it is best not to take felodipine and alcohol together.

Blood pressure-lowering medicines can in rare cases cause your blood pressure to fall too much. Symptoms of excessively low blood pressure include feeling dizzy and chest pain. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Other uncommon side effects include palpitations and a fast heart beat.
If you experience signs of an allergic reaction (e.g swelling of the face, lips, tongue) after taking felodipine, seek medical attention immediately.
Before taking any medication, it is important to read the Patient Information Leaflet. You can find information leaflets for your medicines by typing them into the search bar at medicines.org, or by contacting us.
