What is perindopril?

Perindopril is a medicine used to reduce blood pressure in people diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension). It can be used in the treatment of heart failure and is sometimes prescribed after a heart attack.

Perindopril is only available on prescription and it belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors). 

It is available as the active ingredient perindopril erbumine. It is also available as perindopril arginine, this is known as the brand name Coversyl Arginine. Both types work as well as each other.

How does it work?

Perindopril works in the same way as other ACE inhibitors. They work by blocking an enzyme called ACE. ACE is responsible for narrowing the blood vessels, causing increased blood pressure. 

When perindopril blocks ACE, it allows the blood vessels to relax and widen. This allows easier blood flow through the vessels and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body. By doing this, perindopril reduces blood pressure.

If high blood pressure is left untreated for a long time, the risk of suffering serious health conditions increases. This includes heart attacks, vascular dementia, heart disease, strokes, and kidney disease.

It is important to reduce your blood pressure to healthy levels. This helps to reduce the risk of developing the above health problems. At first, this can be done with lifestyle changes but if necessary, medicines like perindopril can be prescribed.

Helpful lifestyle changes include reducing the amount of salt in your diet, exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Weight loss and stop smoking treatments are available to order from our online doctors.

Hypertension is symptomless and the only way to diagnose high blood pressure is by using a blood pressure monitor. These check both the diastolic pressure (lower number) and the systolic pressure (higher number) to give a blood pressure reading. During treatment with perindopril, you should have regular blood pressure checks by your GP surgery.

Dose

Perindopril erbumine is available in 2mg, 4mg, and 8mg strengths.

When prescribed for hypertension, the starting perindopril dose is usually 4mg once a day. After a month of treatment, the dose can be increased slowly to a maximum of 8mg once a day. The starting dose for elderly patients is usually 2mg once a day. Always take it exactly as your doctor has told you. 

It should be taken in the morning at least 30 minutes before food.

Perindopril is not a beta blocker or diuretic. It belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors). ACE inhibitors are commonly used to treat high blood pressure.

Does perindopril affect the kidneys?

Taking perindopril may affect kidney function in some patients. For this reason, your GP will schedule regular blood tests to monitor your kidneys. Perindopril may not be suitable to take in people with impaired kidney function.

Can perindopril cause weight gain?

The manufacturers of perindopril do not list weight gain as a side effect.

Common perindopril side effects include:

• Vertigo
• Headache
• Tinnitus
• Dizziness
• Pins and needles
• Muscle cramps
• Shortness of breath
• Cough
• Nausea and vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Constipation or diarrhoea
• Low blood pressure

Certain side effects such as dizziness and nausea may improve with time as your body gets used to the medicine. A cough is a common side effect of ACE inhibitors and can be constant and bothersome. Call your doctor or pharmacist if you believe you have side effects from this medicine.

Stop taking perindopril and seek medical attention immediately if you notice any serious side effects such as:

• An unusual fast or irregular heart beat, chest pain or signs of a heart attack
• Severe abdominal and back pain (signs of an inflamed pancreas)
• Yellowing of the eyes or skin (signs of jaundice)

Other conditions and perindopril

Perindopril should not be taken in people:

• With a previous allergic reaction to perindopril or any of the listed ingredients in the tablets
• Who are more than 3 months pregnant
• Who have experienced serious side effects with other ACE inhibitors
• Who are taking a medicine called aliskiren

There are other conditions and circumstances in which perindopril may not be suitable if:

• You have had a recent kidney transplant
• You have uncontrolled diabetes
• You have any heart, kidney or liver problems
• You are having dialysis
• Your doctor has told you to have a low-salt diet
• You have recently had diarrhoea or vomiting

Interactions with other medicines

There are certain medicines that may be unsuitable to take alongside perindopril such as other medicines for blood pressure (e.g aliskiren) and medicines that raise potassium levels (e.g spironolactone).
