What is Rosuvastatin?

Rosuvastatin is a drug that belongs to a group of medicines called statins. Statins are used to reduce cholesterol levels in people who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol. It can also be used to help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who are at risk.

The brand name for rosuvastatin is Crestor. It is a prescription only medicine.

How does it work?

Rosuvastatin reduces blood cholesterol levels. It does this by blocking an enzyme called HMG CoA reductase. This enzyme is responsible for making cholesterol in the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, rosuvastatin slows down the production of ‘bad’ cholesterol.

It also improves the ability of the body to remove ‘bad’ cholesterol from the blood. It can also increase the amount of ‘good’ cholesterol in the body. Blood tests are used to check cholesterol levels in the body.

Dose

Rosuvastatin is available in four different strengths:

  • 5 mg
  • 10 mg
  • 20 mg
  • 40 mg

Rosuvastatin tablets are usually taken once daily. The rosuvastatin dosage you take will be prescribed by your doctor after they consider a number of factors e.g how high your cholesterol level is. Many patients will be prescribed 5mg once daily as a starting dose. This can be increased depending on how you respond to it.

The usual dose to prevent heart attacks and strokes is 20 mg once daily. Children under 18 years of age can be treated with it for high cholesterol that runs in the family. Treatment for this usually starts at a low dose.

Some statins are more efficient if taken at night. This does not apply to rosuvastatin, which can be taken in the morning or at nighttime.

FAQ

Is rosuvastatin a good statin?

All statins are similar and the decision to prescribe a particular statin lies with your doctor. Rosuvastatin is a potent statin. The 5mg strength is described as a medium-intensity statin and the other three strengths are described as high-intensity doses.

What is rosuvastatin 10 mg used for?

Rosuvastatin is used to treat people with high cholesterol. It can also be used to help prevent heart attacks and stroke in at-risk people. The 10mg dose may be used if someone needs to be prescribed a high-intensity statin to reduce their cholesterol.

What are the benefits of rosuvastatin?

Rosuvastatin is efficient at reducing cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol. It is beneficial at preventing heart disease and reducing the risk of problems such as heart attacks and strokes. Unlike some other statins, rosuvastatin can be taken at any time of the day.

What foods should be avoided when taking Rosuvastatin?

Grapefruit juice should be avoided when taking certain statins. Rosuvastatin is not affected by grapefruit juice so patients can drink grapefruit juice whilst taking it. Drinking large amounts of alcohol should be avoided when taking statins because it can damage your liver. Try to keep your intake to the recommended 14 units of alcohol a week.

How long should you take rosuvastatin for?

Rosuvastatin is usually taken for life. It will work for as long as you take it. If you stop taking your statin, your cholesterol levels may rise again. Stopping a statin should not be done without talking to your doctor or a healthcare professional about the risks and benefits of doing so.

Can you just stop taking rosuvastatin?

Most people who take statins will take them for life. There are cases when doctors believe a statin is no longer necessary or not suitable for a patient. You should keep taking your statin unless your doctor tells you to stop. Your cholesterol levels can increase again if you stop taking your statin.

Should rosuvastatin be taken at night or morning?

Some statins are more efficient if taken at night. This does not apply to rosuvastatin, which can be taken in the morning or at nighttime. You should take it at the same time each day.

Can you order rosuvastatin online?

Rosuvastatin can be prescribed online. Before prescribing any medication, our doctors have to assess the suitability of each patient. You will need to complete a medical questionnaire which our doctors will assess.

If approved by our doctors, they will issue a prescription to our pharmacy team. Our pharmacy team will then dispense and dispatch the medicine to your chosen address.

Our statin service is only available to patients who are already prescribed this medicine from their GP.
