What is Femoston?
Femoston is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used for the relief of post-menopausal symptoms in women. It is also prescribed and useful for the prevention of osteoporosis. It contains two active ingredients oestradiol hemihydrate and dydrogesterone. Both are synthetic versions of the natural female hormones oestrogen and progestogen.
This combined HRT can be taken continuously with four different variations of strengths that allow your doctor to provide a dose that better suits each postmenopausal women hormone replacement needs.
Femoston 1/10 & Femoston 2/10
These HRT medicines are used in postmenopausal women who require replacement oestrogen replacement. They are only appropriate for women with an intact womb 6 months after the last menses. These forms of HRT are formulated to mimic the natural menstrual cycle changes in hormones. Even though menstruation may not have occurred due to menopause for 6 months, a breakthrough bleed or spotting may occur.
These variations contain 28-day cycles. The first 14 tablets contain only oestradiol (1mg or 2mg), while the second 14 tablets contain the combination of estradiol and dydrogesterone.
Femoston Conti
This form of Femoston comes in 0.5/2.5mg or 1/5mg strengths and differ from the 1/10 and 2/10 Femoston as they provide a continuous dose of both active ingredients. This medicine can be used in women who have not experienced any menstrual bleeding in 12 months and have an intact womb.
Unlike 1/10 and 2/10, Conti is unlikely to cause any breakthrough bleeding or spotting as it is delivering a consistent dose of progestogen HRT.
Menopause and HRT
Menopause is a natural stage in a women’s life that occurs mostly between the ages of 45 to 55. During this time hormone levels change which can result in a number of symptoms. These can continue on after menopause causing postmenopausal symptoms. These can last for months or years after the last menses and can be incredibly uncomfortable for women. Symptoms can include hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, low mood, insomnia, decreased libido and problems concentrating.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) such as Femoston and Femoston Conti replace the lost hormones in the body providing relief from postmenopausal symptoms.
After menopause, the risk of developing osteoporosis increases in women due to the decrease in oestrogens. HRT replaces some of the lost oestrogen mitigating some of the risks of osteoporosis development.
How does Femoston work?
Menopause decreases the natural female hormone production in the body causing changes and postmenopausal symptoms. HRT restores some of the lost hormones after menopause by introducing them back with tablets at regular intervals. The replacement hormones from Femoston act just like natural hormones would, resulting in improved postmenopausal symptoms and bone density (osteoporosis prevention).
Dosage
Femoston should be taken on a 28 day cycle with ONE tablet being taken daily with no breaks between packs. It may be taken with water and with or without food. Try to take the tablet at the same time each day to minimise hormone fluctuation.
It is important that the cycles on the 1/10 and 2/10 packs are followed closely with 14 sequential days of the single ingredient oestrogen tablet followed by 14 sequential days of the combination tablet. The order in which you take the tablets is marked with an arrow on the foil of the pack. If you are ever unsure which tablet is which, refer to the patient information leaflet or talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Generally, your doctor will aim to prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary to minimise side effects and risks.

Warnings
Warnings & Precautions
HRT is not appropriate for every woman. It is important that all aspects of your health are considered when you and your doctor are making the decision whether the benefits outweigh the risks. The doctor will need to assess your risk factors and family history before prescribing. While taking the treatment, it is important that you see your doctor at least once per year for check-ups to decide whether the medicine is still needed and for screening.
Do not take Femoston if you:
- Have had breast cancer or endometrial cancer
- Have endometrial hyperplasia (excessive womb lining thickening)
- Have had a blood clot or a clotting disorder
- Have had a stroke, heart attack or angina
- Are allergic to any listed ingredient in the medicine
- Have liver disease
If you experience any of these for the first time while on Femoston, stop treatment immediately and consult a doctor.
There are a number of conditions that may mean you require more regular checkups with your doctor in order to use the medicine safely, these include:
- High blood pressure
- Fibroids
- Increased risk of blood clots
- Family history of heart disease, cancer and blood clotting
- Diabetes
- Gallstones
- Liver and kidney problems/ disorders
- Epilepsy
Consult your doctor about how often your checkups will need to be with these conditions.
Blood clots and Femoston
Studies have shown that over the course of 5 years HRT use that there is a potential extra 5 cases of blood clotting out of 1000 women. Length of time on treatment and other risk factors can result in increased risk. Although this risk is low, people taking the medicine should be aware of the signs and symptoms of a blood clot to avoid complications.
Cancer and Femoston
In women taking HRT there may be up to an extra 8 cases per 1000 women of breast cancer and an extra 1 case per 1000 women for ovarian cancer. This is the reason why check ups and screening is required for women on HRT.
Heart disease and Stroke
There is a slightly increased risk of heart disease and strokes while on HRT. Again the increased incidence remains low however the risks for you must be decided by a doctor.
