    Overview

    What is Oral Thrush?

    Oral thrush is an infection, caused by a fungus known as candida. These fungi are part of your normal body flora (the bacteria and fungi which live on your skin and in your digestive tract). However, some factors and other health conditions can cause them to grow out of balance with the rest of your body, leading to infections.

    The most common symptoms of oral thrush include;

    • White patches on the interior of the mouth, which may bleed
    • White coating on the tongue
    • Unpleasant taste in the mouth
    • Pain (sore tongue or gums), cracks at the corner of the mouth
    • Difficulty eating or drinking, lack of taste

    Oral thrush is more common in babies and older people with dentures. Normally, oral thrush is harmless; however, if you regularly get oral thrush infections,or have other medical conditions, such as diabetes or conditions related to your immune system, you should speak to your doctor before seeking treatment.

    Oral Thrush Treatments

    The most common treatments for any thrush infections are antifungal medications. These medications specifically target fungal cells, causing less damage to your own cells in the process.

    Nystan (Nystatin) works by punching holes in the cell walls of fungal cells, causing them to die off. Nystan is given as a liquid, which you swish around in your mouth to kill off the infection at the source.
