About Lyclear
Lyclear is a cream used in treating infestations of scabies, pubic lice and crab lice on the body. It contains the active ingredient permethrin, which works to kill scabies mites. Generally, Lyclear will be effective in controlling an infestation after just one application. To make sure your treatment is successful, read the advice on how to apply the cream carefully.
The itching associated with scabies can continue for up to 4 weeks even after a successful application of Lyclear Dermal Cream, as the dead mites and eggs are still attached to the skin. There is no need to reapply the cream within this period. You can relieve symptoms of the itch by applying itch relief creams or taking an antihistamine, however.
How does Lyclear (Permethrin) work?
Permethrin works by affecting insects (including lice and mites) nervous systems causing them to have muscle spasms, become paralysed and die. While small concentrations of permethrin are highly effective on insects, it does not have the same negative effects on humans in these tiny doses, making it a generally well-tolerated medicine.
Who to treat with Lyclear
All members of the household, sexual partners within the past month, and any other close personal contacts of the infected individual (even if asymptomatic) should also be treated with Lyclear.
How much Lyclear to use
Adults should apply up to 30g of cream to the body, equal to one full tube. For children aged 6-12 years, apply up to 15g to the body, or half of one tube. For children aged 2-5 years, up to 7.5g of cream or one-quarter of a tube can be applied to the body. Children aged 2 months to 2 years must only have the cream applied after under direct medical advice from a doctor.
Applying Lyclear
For adults and children aged over 2, the cream should be applied across the whole body including the neck, palms of the hands, soles of the feet and to facial hair if affected. The head, neck and face should only be treated if affected by scabies. If live lice and eggs are found on facial hair and eyelashes, apply the cream to the facial hair. If eyelashes are affected, use tweezers to carefully remove any mites or eggs.
Particular attention should be paid to your armpits, between fingers and toes, genital areas, buttocks and wrists. Leave the cream on overnight before washing.
Adults should always be responsible for applying the cream to children.
Children under the age of 2 years should not use Lyclear unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.

Other Advice
To help relieve the symptoms associated with scabies or lice, you can use an antihistamine or anti-itch cream to relieve these symptoms if required. Examples include;
- Cetirizine (anti-histamine tablets)
- Loratadine (anti-histamine tablets)
- E45 Itch Relief
- Eurax
These may be particularly useful even after Lyclear use, as itching can continue for weeks after treatment. This does not necessarily mean you still have the mite.
Lyclear Side Effects
As with all medications, there are possible side effects of Lyclear Dermal Cream, however, not everyone will experience these. The potential side effects are:
Common: may affect 1-10% of people.
Itching (pruritus), reddening of the skin or unusual sensations on the skin (paraesthesias) such as tingling, pricking, skin burning sensation as well as dry skin are common. However, such symptoms can also occur as a result of the disease itself. Moisturisers and oil baths are recommended as follow up treatments for dry skin. The itching and a skin rash (post-scabies eczema) may persist for up to four weeks after the end of treatment. This is caused by a reaction to the killed scabies mites. If after using Lyclear Dermal Cream you have the impression that the disease is persisting, please speak to your doctor before applying it again.
For a full list of the potential side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet.
