What is Fluconazole?

How long does fluconazole take to work?

It is effective in both men and women. A single dose of fluconazole 150mg can begin to resolve symptoms of thrush in under a day, with full resolution taking between 3-7 days in uncomplicated cases of thrush. Fluconazole in men may take slightly longer to clear thrush than in women.

Is fluconazole an antibiotic?

What does thrush look like?

In women, thrush can cause swelling around the genitals with general irritation and itchiness. It can also cause a cottage-cheese like creamy white discharge from the vagina.

If men are affected, it usually presents as redness and irritation around the top of the penis, as well as discharge. For both sexes, the inflammation can lead to a burning sensation when urinating.

Warnings & Precautions

Fluconazole may not be suitable for some people. Do not take fluconazole if:

• You are allergic to fluconazole or any azole antifungal or any of the ingredients contained within the capsules.
• You are taking any of the following medications: cisapride, astemizole, pimozide, quinidine, and erythromycin.
• You are pregnant, trying to become pregnant
• You suffer from kidney disease or liver problems
• You have heart rhythm problems
• You have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other similar medicine
• You are taking any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines, without checking with your doctor or pharmacist if your drugs interact.

Fluconazole in pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant do not take fluconazole oral capsules. There are risks associated with oral fluconazole during the first trimester. Consult your doctor about alternative treatments that are appropriate for pregnant women.

Breastfeeding can continue after taking a single dose of fluconazole, although if a repeat dose is required it may not be appropriate. Always consult your doctor before using this treatment while breastfeeding.
