What is Fluconazole?
Fluconazole is an oral capsule used to treat vaginal thrush (Candidal vaginitis) and thrush affecting the penis (candidal Balanitis). It may be used on other yeast infections in the body but primarily genital thrush.
Fluconazole is a better value generic version of Canesten 150mg. Both Fluconazole 150mg and Canesten 150mg both contain the same amount of active ingredient and will have the same effect, only differing in cost.
Fluconazole for thrush
Thrush is a fungal overgrowth of Candida Albicans. This fungus is a natural part of a healthy body, but when the body’s natural balance of bacteria and fungus, known as the flora, gets out of balance, Candida Albicans overgrows resulting in a thrush infection.
Thrush of the vagina can cause symptoms such as:
- Vaginal itching
- Genital irritation
- A white vaginal discharge (similar to cottage cheese)
- Soreness and stinging during urination or sex
Thrush of the penis can cause symptoms such as:
- Irritation
- A white discharge
- Unpleasant genital odour
- A tightened foreskin
How does Fluconazole work?
When there is an overgrowth of Candida albicans fluconazole Fluconazole capsules are an azole antifungal medication that works by making holds in the funnel cell membrane stopping fungal cells ability to multiply, effectively killing it, returning the body’s flora back to normal.
How long does fluconazole take to work?
It is effective in both men and women. A single dose of fluconazole 150mg can begin to resolve symptoms of thrush in under a day, with full resolution taking between 3-7 days in uncomplicated cases of thrush. Fluconazole in men may take slightly longer to clear thrush than in women.
More complicated cases of thrush may require a longer course. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if symptoms have not fully cleared in 7 days.
Fluconazole Dosage
For treating thrush with fluconazole 150mg capsules the dose is one capsule swallowed whole with a glass of water. It may be taken with or without food.
If your symptoms do not improve or they get worse, check with your doctor or healthcare professional.

Thrush prevention
Thrush is generally caused by a disruption in the body’s natural flora (bacteria and fungi). To avoid thrush, attempt to avoid upsetting this healthy balance. Avoid the following triggers for thrush where possible or take active steps to balance flora:
- Some medicines and antibiotics - take probiotics
- Restrictive underwear
- Perfumed soaps and douching
- Wipe from front to back
Alternatives
An alternative treatment for thrush is Canesten thrush cream. This cream is applied directly into the vagina to treat the infection at the source. While applying this cream can be uncomfortable and invasive for some, it is preferred in some women as it can assist with reducing irritation in the vagina faster than fluconazole capsules in some cases.
For women with irritation that wish to buy a fluconazole 150mg single treatment as well as a cream for irritation, Canesten thrush duo provides this in one pack. Please note the cream in this medicine is for external use to reduce irritation while fluconazole clears the yeast infection.
Please note that fluconazole capsules are not generally used for oral thrush. For oral thrush treatment, you can use Daktarin oral gel or consult your doctor.
Fluconazole side effects

- Stomach ache
- Diarrhoea
- Skin rash

FAQ
Is fluconazole an antibiotic?
No, it is an antifungal medicine. Thrush is a fungal infection, not a bacterial infection and therefore an antibiotic would be ineffective at treating the condition.
Can I use antifungal cream with a fluconazole 150mg capsule?
Yes, you may use an antifungal cream for irritation with a single dose fluconazole treatment for thrush. Doing so provides irritation relief while fluconazole clears the infection.
What strengths does fluconazole come in?
It comes in 50 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg capsules however for genital thrush, only 150mg strength is appropriate.
What does thrush look like?
In women, thrush can cause swelling around the genitals with general irritation and itchiness. It can also cause a cottage-cheese like creamy white discharge from the vagina.
If men are affected, it usually presents as redness and irritation around the top of the penis, as well as discharge. For both sexes, the inflammation can lead to a burning sensation when urinating.
Why do some people get thrush and others don’t?
Candida albicans is the name of the yeast which causes thrush. It is found naturally in the body, meaning anyone can get thrush. The reason why it becomes activated for some and not others is not yet determined. Thrush can be more common in diabetics, pregnant women and those taking antibiotics.
Does my partner need treatment if I have been diagnosed with thrush?
Thrush is not an STI but can be passed on through intercourse with someone infected. It is common to see thrush being passed onto the partners of those with thrush and men do not necessarily have to show any symptoms for it. It is recommended for men and women who suffer from recurring thrush to also get their partner treated to eradicate the infection completely.
