What is Bendroflumethiazide?
Bendroflumethiazide is a medicine that is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) alone or with other medication. It can also be used to treat fluid retention (oedema). It belongs to a family of medicines called thiazide diuretics but is more commonly known as a water tablet.
It is a prescription-only medicine.
How does it work?
Thiazide diuretics are sometimes called water tablets because they increase how much you urinate. By doing this they get rid of extra fluid from your body. Bendroflumethiazide works to reduce the amount of fluid in the blood.
This makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around the body and reduces your blood pressure. It can also help make other blood pressure medicines more effective at reducing blood pressure.
It is important that people diagnosed with high blood pressure get treatment to reduce it. If a person has high blood pressure over a long time, it puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs. Although there are no symptoms of high blood pressure, in the long term it can lead to a number of serious complications like aneurysms, heart failure, kidney disease, strokes and heart attacks.
The risk of high blood pressure is increased in people with an unhealthy lifestyle. Making certain changes to your lifestyle can lower your risk, such as improving your diet, losing weight if you are overweight and exercising more.
Weight loss medication like orlistat is available to order from our online doctor service. Stopping smoking can also help to reduce blood pressure.
If you would like a blood pressure reading you can speak to your GP surgery or visit a local pharmacy. Some people buy blood pressure monitors to allow them to take a blood pressure reading at home.
Dose
It should be taken as directed by your doctor. Bendroflumethiazide tablets are available in two different strengths:

The bendroflumethiazide dose for people with hypertension is one 2.5mg tablet once daily. The dose should be taken in the morning. If doses are taken in the night it may disturb your sleep because it makes you pee more.
The dose used to treat fluid retention (oedema) is generally 5mg once daily.
