What is Ovestin cream?

Ovestin vaginal cream contains 1mg of the active ingredient estriol. It is a type of medicine called Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It is used to relieve menopausal symptoms that affect the vagina such as irritation or dryness.

Other HRT medicines, like patches or tablets, are used to treat different menopause symptoms like night sweats and mood changes. You can visit our online HRT clinic for more information.

Ovestin 1mg cream contains 1mg of Estriol per 1g of cream.

How does Ovestin cream work?

The drop in oestrogen levels in the body that happens after the menopause can cause vaginal problems.

After the menopause, the decline of oestrogen levels in the body can cause menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness. The active ingredient in Ovestin cream, estriol, acts as a substitute for the lost oestrogen. By replacing the lost oestrogen, it can help to relieve symptoms like dryness, irritation, pain during sex, and recurrent infections.

How to apply Ovestin cream

Applying Ovestin may be more convenient just before bed. The pack contains a cream and a plastic applicator. The applicator is used to apply the cream in the vagina. The applicator has a ring marked on it, filling the applicator up to the ring with cream will provide the correct dose.

Screw the end of the applicator onto the tube of cream and squeeze the tube until the applicator is filled to the red mark. Unscrew the applicator from the tube and put the cap back on the tube. Lie down and put the end of the applicator deep into your vagina and slowly push the plunger all the way in. This releases the cream into your vagina.

Remove the applicator and clean the applicator in hot and soapy water after every use. See the patient information leaflet for complete instructions with diagrams.

Side Effects

Ovestin can cause some vaginal side effects such as vaginal discharge, bleeding, or spotting. It can also cause itching or irritation in or around the vagina at the start of treatment. This usually improves after several weeks of use. Other possible side effects include swollen and tender breasts, headaches, and nausea.

If you notice any side effects with Ovestin, stop using the cream and consult your doctor.

HRT medicines containing oestrogen can cause an increased risk of serious conditions such as stroke, ovarian cancer, and blood clots. The increased risk is likely less with treatments administered vaginally because they have less of an effect on the whole body. However, you should read the patient information leaflet to learn about these risks. If you have any questions, contact your doctor or pharmacist for medical advice.

Ovestin cream alternatives

Other treatments can be used to alleviate vaginal dryness. Vagifem contains the oestrogen estradiol and it is a vaginal tablet inserted into the vagina using an applicator. Another product containing estradiol is Estring, which is a vaginal ring that is inserted into the vagina and replaced every 90 days.

Vaginal moisturisers like Replens MD and Sylk lubricant can be used to relieve vaginal dryness and irritation.
