Wegovy is an obesity management treatment designed to make you feel less hungry. It is a once weekly injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection).

You can buy Wegovy injection pens in the UK, online, from our UK registered online pharmacy and doctor service. This is a prescription only weight loss medication. After completing a short online consultation, your order will pass to our prescribers for review. If approved, a prescription will be passed to our pharmacy team, who can dispense and dispatch your medication.

Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide, and is prescribed for adults with obesity. This is the same active ingredient as the diabetic drug "Ozempic".

What Is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a weight loss injection that can be an effective aid to support a weight loss journey - when used alongside a healthy balanced diet and increased physical activity exercise. The weight loss drug contains the active ingredient semaglutide.

Launched in the United Kingdom in 2023, Wegovy was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for obesity management.

Wegovy is a prescription only medication for adults living with obesity. This means with a body mass index (BMI) over 30. It can also be used by people with a BMI over 27 with medical history of weight-related conditions (such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes).

How Wegovy Works

Wegovy works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which plays a role in regulating appetite.

GLP-1 acts on areas of the brain involved in hunger and satiety, helping to reduce appetite and helping the patient feel fuller for longer. Wegovy also slows the emptying of your stomach, which can help you feel satisfied for longer after eating.

By reducing hunger and increasing feelings of fullness, Wegovy supports appetite regulation, which may help patients maintain healthier eating patterns as part of a clinically supervised obesity management plan.

Wegovy Prices

Prices for Wegovy can be as low as £24.75 a week. Bundle packs can vary in price depending on the strength.

There are also multi-month bundles available for higher strengths, lowering the weekly cost. Some patients choose to maintain at 1mg for affordability, but maximum weight loss is achieved at the higher doses. This is reached through a 6-step titration.

0.25mg - Starter Dose

This is the starter dose, which is used for the first 4 weeks to allow your body to adjust. Price: £99 per 4 doses (1 month)

0.5mg - Titration Dose

This dose follows 0.25mg and continues the safe titration process. Price: £119 per 4 doses (1 month)

1mg - Effective Dose

Patients typically begin to notice more significant weight loss at this stage. Price: From £125 per 4 doses (1 month)

1.7mg - Titration Dose

This dose should only be used after titration. This dose is often associated with more visible progress. Price: £169 per 4 doses (1 month)

2.4mg - Maintenance Dose

This is a maintenance dose that can support patients in long term obesity management. Price: From £189 per 4 doses (1 month)

7.2mg - Highest Maintenance Dose

This is the highest maintenance dose of Wegovy, where maximum weight loss is typically achieved. Price: From £329 per 4x3 doses (1 month)

How to Take Wegovy

The dose is increased every 4 weeks over a titration period of up to 20 weeks. Patients start with a 0.25 mg once-weekly dose for the first 4 weeks, with the dose gradually increased to reach a maintenance dose.

For most patients, the standard maintenance dose is 2.4 mg once weekly from week 17 onwards. In selected cases, dose escalation may continue to higher maintenance dose of 7.2 mg under medical supervision.

This gradual increase is important because it helps minimise the risk of side effects. If side effects do occur, they are most commonly experienced during the dose-escalation phase and often improve over time.

Wegovy can be taken at any time of day and can be used with or without meals. It is injected subcutaneously into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

Injection sites should be rotated to avoid repeatedly using the same area. For more guidance, read our Wegovy dosage guide.

Using the Wegovy Pen

Step 1: Wash your hands.

Step 2: Remove the pen cap and check the label, dose of Wegovy, expiry date, and that the solution is clear and colourless.

Step 3: Attach a new needle and remove the inner needle cap, keeping the outer cap for later.

Step 4: Perform a flow check, turn knob until you see double dots: and press, this will release a little bit of the solution to ensure flow is ready.

Step 5: Choose and wipe the injection site with a swab and let dry (abdomen, thigh, or upper arm), rotating sites each week and avoiding 5 cm around the belly button.

Step 5a: If using 7.2 mg dose, there will be 3 doses of 2.4 mg. Leave at least 5 cm between injection sites to reduce local irritation.

Step 6: Turn the dose selector until your prescribed dose lines up with the dose pointer.

Step 7: Insert the needle and press and hold the dose button until the counter shows 0, then keep holding for 6 seconds before removing.

Step 8: Add the needle cap and safely remove the needle. Dispose of the needle immediately in a sharps bin.

Step 9: Replace the pen cap and store as directed.

Is Wegovy Effective for Weight Loss?

Clinical trials have shown that Wegovy treatment resulted in a statistically significant reduction in body weight compared with placebo.

In phase 3 studies using the standard 2.4 mg maintenance dose, adults treated with Wegovy achieved an average of ~17% weight loss after 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% in the placebo group.

The majority of patients responded to treatment, with 83.5% achieving clinically meaningful weight loss, compared with 31.1% of patients receiving placebo.

More recent evidence from the STEP UP phase 3b randomised clinical trial evaluated a higher 7.2 mg maintenance dose of semaglutide in adults living with obesity.

At 72 weeks, participants receiving 7.2 mg achieved an average weight loss of ~20.7% compared with the standard 2.4 mg dose and placebo. 33.2% of participants lost ~25% of their starting body weight.

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended Wegovy for weight management in adults living with obesity, based on the strength of the clinical trial evidence.

Wegovy vs Placebo Trial Results

Wegovy 7.2 mg

Wegovy 7.2 mg was associated with an average weight loss of ~20.7% at 72 weeks in clinical trials.

This higher-dose formulation of semaglutide was evaluated in the STEP UP phase 3b randomised clinical trial in adults with obesity without diabetes. Participants received once-weekly injections with gradual dose escalation, followed by a 7.2 mg maintenance dose, with outcomes compared against placebo and the standard 2.4 mg Wegovy maintenance dose.

Overall, more patients achieved clinically meaningful weight loss at the higher dose. As with other doses, the side effects of Wegovy seen at the higher dose were consistent with the established long term Wegovy safety profile and generally occurred during dose titration.

• For the 7.2 mg dose of wegovy, inject three separate 2.4 mg doses on the same day, one after the other.
• Injections can be given in the same injection site/body area but must be at least 5 cm apart.
• Change the needle between each injection.
• You may need to use more than one pen. Do not discard a pen until it is empty.
• Partially used pens must be stored in the fridge with the needle removed.
• Make sure you have a sufficient supply of pens before your dosing day.

Can Wegovy Help with Other Conditions?

While Wegovy (semaglutide) has shown great results for weight loss, research shows it might have additional benefits.

The SELECT [1] study, conducted world-wide with over 17,000 patients, aimed to demonstrate Wegovy’s ability to reduce a patient’s chances of experiencing a repeat cardiovascular event (such as a heart attack or stroke).

The study appeared to be successful, showing a 20% risk reduction (SELECT trial - See section 5.1 - here) - so you are 20% less likely to have a heart attack/stroke if you have had one previously, independent of weight lost.

This shows that Wegovy has specific beneficial properties on the heart.

This is what sets Wegovy apart from other similar weight loss medications; it has significant evidence to back up its positive impact on reducing the risk of a secondary heart attack or stroke.

So, if you have cardiovascular disease, such as a previous heart attack or stroke, and are in two minds as to which weight loss option is for you, this may be a point of difference.

Wegovy Side Effects

As with all medicines, some people may experience side effects from the treatment. Not everyone will get them and a majority will be mild. Only 5.3% of patients in one clinical trial stopped Wegovy due to side effects.

The most common Wegovy side effects are:

• Headache
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Fatigue

These side effects usually improve over time as your body gets used to the medicine. Gradually increasing the dose every 4 weeks helps to reduce the risk of experiencing these side effects. If you find your side effects are severe or aren’t improving, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Contraindications & Drug Interactions

This medicine is not suitable for anyone who has had an allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in the injection.

Wegovy can cause digestive system side effects like vomiting and diarrhoea. These side effects can increase the risk of dehydration, so you should make sure that you drink enough fluids.

The recommended water intake of 2-3 liters per day can help mitigate or even prevent many side effects.

An uncommon side effect that may be experienced is pancreatitis. If you notice any symptoms of pancreatitis, such as severe stomach pain, stop using Wegovy and see a doctor straight away. You can read more about pancreatitis symptoms on the NHS website.

People with diabetes should not use Wegovy as a substitute for insulin. It can also increase the risk of getting low blood sugar levels when taken with other diabetic medicines. See section 2 of the patient information leaflet for a full list of warnings.

Wegovy has not been shown to reduce the effectiveness of the oral hormonal contraceptive pill. Unlike some other weight loss medicines that require additional barrier contraception during dose changes, this is not necessary with Wegovy. It also has fewer interactions with narrow therapeutic index medicines, making it a more straightforward option for patients concerned about contraception and medicine interactions.

This medication is not suitable for anyone experiencing diabetic retinopathy. Speak to your doctor before using Wegovy if this applies to you.

Wegovy and Pregnancy

Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy, as it may harm the foetus. Treatment should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Wegovy should also not be used while breastfeeding.

Wegovy Alternatives

There are many alternative weight loss treatments available in the UK, including Orlistat and its branded equivalent Xenical.

Saxenda is the closest medicine to Wegovy currently licensed for weight loss in the UK. It works in the same way and is manufactured by the same company, Novo Nordisk. Saxenda is injected once daily into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm.

Mounjaro is another injectable weight loss treatment now available in the UK. It works in a similar way to Wegovy but contains a different active ingredient, tirzepatide. Tirzepatide is a dual agonist GLP-1/GIP. Mounjaro is taken once weekly and has been shown to help patients achieve significant weight loss.

Ozempic is also available to buy from some UK weight loss clinics. Ozempic also contains Semaglutide, the same active ingredient that's in Wegovy. However, the treatment is licensed for use in diabetes. While it is legal to prescribe it for weight loss, we currently choose not to do so, due to the possible impact on diabetic patients who require this medication.

An oral version of Wegovy is currently in development and has received FDA approval in the United States. It contains the same active ingredient - semaglutide - but is taken as a once-daily tablet rather than a weekly injection.

The Wegovy pill not yet available in the UK. The MHRA is reviewing the application, with a decision expected by the seconde half of 2026. We will update this page as soon as it becomes available to prescribe through Simple Online Pharmacy.

There is not currently a generic form of Wegovy or Mounjaro - these treatments are too new to be replicated. Unlike Wegovy and Mounjaro, generic drugs that are equivalent to many medications are available through our online store such as Nevolat.
