What is Canesten HC Cream?

Canesten Hydrocortisone cream  (also called Canesten HC) is a cream containing both a mild steroid (Hydrocortisone) and an antifungal agent (Clotrimazole). It is commonly used in the treatment of:

  • Fungal sweat rashes
  • Fungal infection of the breast fold
  • Fungal nappy rashes
  • Other fungal (yeast) infections, such as tinea cruris (jock itch)

Clotrimazole works to kill the fungi and yeasts which cause these conditions. Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines known as Imidazoles, which are commonly used treatments for fungal infections.

Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory medicine, meaning it reduces skin inflammation. When your skin is damaged, it can release chemicals that cause it to become inflamed. This is a normal part of your body's immune response. Hydrocortisone works by stopping these chemicals from being released and helps to reduce inflammatory symptoms like redness and itching.

Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream should not be used for longer than 7 days without speaking to your doctor.

Canesten HC side effects

Not everyone will experience side effects with Canesten Hydrocortisone cream. Possible side effects associated with using this cream include irritation, rash, stinging or burning at the application site. It may also cause blisters, peeling and discomfort at the affected area of skin.

If you are concerned about these effects, or if the cream affects you in any other way, stop using it and consult your doctor or pharmacist.

How to apply Canesten Hydrocortisone cream

Wash your hands before and after use. If the cream is being used for athlete’s foot: ensure your feet are washed and dried properly (paying close attention to the areas between the toes) before applying the cream.

Apply a thin, even layer of the cream to the affected area two times a day, gently rubbing it in. Do not use the cream for more than 7 days. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen after 7 days.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

About Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot (also known as Tinea Pedis), is the most common fungal infection of the skin. Symptoms initially present with scaling and itching on only one foot (mainly seen between the 4th and 5th toe). The soles of the feet may also become scaly and dry.

Athlete’s foot is common in adults, though less common in children. One of the main causes is through contact with fungal spores which are found in public places such as swimming pools and changing rooms.

About Fungal Sweat Rash

Sweat rashes can come in a variety of forms. The most common form is miliaria, which is caused by the pores of the skin being blocked, leading to the sweat glands in the skin becoming inflamed. These conditions are perfect for fungal infections to develop if not treated correctly.

Miliaria can present in several ways - miliaria rubra is caused by the sweat glands in the deeper layers of the skin being blocked, which can develop into miliaria profunda. Miliaria pustulosa comes with small white spots on the surface of the skin.

These rashes can develop anywhere on the body. Areas with lots of contact with clothing or large amounts of friction such as skin folds may be more likely to develop these skin rashes.

Practical tips

  • Good foot hygiene (washing and drying daily thoroughly, in particular between the toes) can reduce your chances of infection.
  • Wearing open shoes and changing shoes and socks every 2-3 days will help prevent the recurrence of athlete's foot.
  • Wearing protective footwear (flip flops or plastic shoes) in public shower rooms or changing areas.
  • Trying not to scratch affected areas, as this could potentially spread the infection to other areas of your body.
  • Avoid close-fitting clothing where possible, and stick with breathable garments.
  • Avoid excessive soap or other irritants, such as bleach.
  • Heat rashes can be cooled with a cold compress or cool bath.
