What is Canesten Thrush Duo?
Canesten Thrush Duo contains two products; an oral capsule to treat the infection, and a tube of cream to soothe the symptoms. Canesten Thrush Duo is used to treat thrush in women aged between 16 and 60 years old.
The Canesten Thrush Oral capsule contains Fluconazole 150mg, Fluconazole is an azole medication; an antifungal agent which fights the cause of the infection. The Canesten Thrush Oral capsule is an effective single-dose treatment for the symptoms of thrush. Oral preparations are particularly effective if you are experiencing inflammation, which causes topical application to be painful.
The Canesten Thrush External Cream contains Clotrimazole 2% w/w, used to soothe and relieve the symptoms of thrush. Clotrimazole is an imidazole medication; equally effective as fluconazole in combating the infection, while also providing comfort from pain and itching of the vulva.
Thrush vs Cystitis
It can be easy to confuse thrush (fungal vaginal infection) with cystitis (bacterial vaginal infection). Both conditions can have similar symptoms, including pain or discomfort during urination. The main way to distinguish between the two conditions is that cystitis does not produce discharge under normal circumstances.
If you are unsure whether you are suffering from thrush or cystitis, you should seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Effectiveness
Canesten Thrush Duo is one of the most widely used medications for treating thrush - however, every infection can respond differently to medication. If you find Canesten Thrush Duo is not effective for you, or wish to try an alternative, other treatments are available, such as the Canesten Thrush Soft Gel Pessary.

Practical Tips
Avoid wearing tight-fitting trousers or tights; fungal infections are mostly caused by warm, moist environments, and these sorts of clothing combined with body heat and sweat can create perfect conditions for fungal growth.
Wearing loose-fitting cotton underwear can allow the skin to breathe more, making it less likely to create an environment where thrush can flourish.
Ironing or tumble-drying underwear may also kill any residual fungal spores, which may trigger a recurrent infection.
How to use Canesten Thrush Duo
Canesten Oral capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food.
Canesten Thrush External Cream should be applied thinly and evenly to the area around the entrance of the vagina and rubbed in gently. The cream can be applied 2-3 times a day as needed.
The treatment should be continued until symptoms disappear. The symptoms of thrush should disappear within two days of treatment.
The cream can also be used to treat thrush on the penis; as above, apply the cream thinly and evenly over the affected area. In order to help prevent re-infection, ensure your partner also uses the cream.

FAQ
What is thrush?
Thrush is a fungal infection of the vagina. A yeast called candida normally lives in your body without causing problems. However, if the level of acidity of your vagina changes, these micro-organisms can multiply, overtaking the regular vaginal fauna and create an infection. This leads to the tell-tale itching and discharge found in thrush.
Who gets thrush?
At some point in their lives, three-quarters of women will suffer from thrush. Those who are pregnant or those under 20 years old will find themselves particularly vulnerable to thrush.
People with diabetes may also find themselves prone to thrush. There are a few reasons for this - higher blood sugar levels provide more fuel for the yeast to grow, and a weakened immune system will find it harder to keep the candida in check.
Men can also suffer from thrush; however, they will only have the symptoms of a rash and itchiness. Men mostly act as a carrier of the infection, without actually presenting symptoms.
How long does Canesten take to work on thrush?
The symptoms of thrush should disappear within 2 days of taking the capsule and using Canesten Thrush Cream.
Can you take Canesten Duo during pregnancy?
If you are pregnant, you cannot buy Canesten Duo over the counter. If you are pregnant, trying for a baby, or think you might be pregnant and have thrush, please see your doctor.
When should you see your doctor?
You should speak to your doctor if you have seen no improvement after using Canesten Thrush Duo for seven days. If you have had more than two thrush infections within six months, this may indicate an underlying issue - please speak to your doctor.
Patients who have poorly controlled diabetes are particularly prone to fungal infections and should seek advice from their doctor. Thrush can also be an indicator of immune system issues and other medical concerns. If you are experiencing recurrent thrush then you should seek advice from your doctor. If you are under the age of 16 or over the age of 60 and suffering from thrush, you should talk to your doctor.
