Codeine Linctus is a treatment for persistent, unproductive and annoying dry coughs. This treatment works by suppressing the body's cough instinct and reducing the amount you cough. It's therefore important to be sure that your cough is not productive, and that no phlegm is 'sitting' in your throat or chest. Using this medicine when you have phlegm associated with your cough can result in a build-up of phlegm.
The active ingredient in the linctus is Codeine. Codeine is from the family of drugs called opioids, and as well as the effect on reducing coughing, it can also be used as a pain killer. This medication is not for use as a pain killer, however, as there are specific painkilling medicines containing codeine such as co-codamol.
One of the main side effects of codeine is drowsiness. You should not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
Dosage Instructions
When taking codeine linctus for a dry cough, the following dosages apply;
Adults should take 1 x 5ml spoonful, four times a day. Repeat after 4 hours if required but not more than 4 doses in 24 hours.
Do not give to children under 18 years old and do not exceed the stated dose. If symptoms persist or worsen consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Elderly patients should speak to their doctor if they have a persistent dry cough. It is possible it is symptomatic of another condition, or a side effect of another medication. A lower dose may be more suitable.
