What is Dermovate Cream?

Dermovate is a topical corticosteroid treatment. It contains the active ingredient Clobetasol propionate 0.05%. Clobetasol is classed as a very potent corticosteroid and can be used to treat certain inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

However, it should only be used as a short term treatment and only when less potent corticosteroids haven’t been effective. Dermovate is available as a cream, an ointment, and a scalp application.

How does Dermovate work?

The active ingredient, clobetasol, is a topical corticosteroid. It works by helping to reduce inflammation in the affected area of skin. In certain skin conditions, like eczema, the skin becomes inflamed after the body releases inflammatory chemicals. This can cause symptoms like itching, redness, swelling and even pain.

Steroid creams and ointments like clobetasol act to stop these chemicals from being released by the skin cells. By doing so, they reduce inflammation and the associated symptoms like itching and redness. Clobetasol is a very potent corticosteroid and for this reason, is usually prescribed for short term use.

What is Dermovate cream used for?

This medicine can be used to treat various inflammatory skin conditions. It can be prescribed to treat eczema that frequently flares up, psoriasis (except widespread plaque psoriasis) and lichen planus. It can also be used to treat discoid lupus erythematosus and dermatitis.

It helps to improve the itching, swelling, irritation and redness in these conditions. By doing so, it can help to improve the appearance of these conditions - which can often have a significant mental impact.

How to apply Dermovate cream and ointment

You should apply Dermovate exactly as your doctor or dermatologist has told you to. Usually, patients are prescribed to apply it once or twice a day. Your doctor may tell you to reduce the frequency of application as your skin improves. They may also tell you to stop using it when your skin gets better.

A thin layer of Dermovate ointment or cream should be applied only to the affected areas of skin. Gently rub it in until the ointment or cream disappears. You should wash your hands before and after applying topical steroids.

The amount of Dermovate applied varies depending on the part of the body affected. See section 3 of the patient information leaflet or the NHS website for a description of how much to apply using fingertip units (FTUs).

You should not use Dermovate for more than 4 weeks without talking to your doctor. If you need treatment for a long time, your doctor may decide you need to use a milder topical treatment.

If your condition worsens or does not improve within 2 to 4 weeks, speak to your doctor for medical advice.

FAQ

Where do I apply Dermovate cream?

You should apply the cream only to the affected areas of skin that the doctor told you to. Your doctor may prescribe a milder topical steroid for areas of skin with milder symptoms. They may only prescribe Dermovate to be used on the most severely affected areas.

Is Dermovate cream prescription only?

Dermovate cream, in the UK, is a prescription-only medicine. It cannot be bought over the counter and requires a prescription from a doctor or healthcare professional.

How long should I use Dermovate?

You should use Dermovate for the length of time specified by your doctor. You should not use it for more than 4 weeks at a time without talking to your doctor. Some doctors may prescribe a milder topical steroid for you to use instead of Dermovate once your skin condition improves.

Can I buy Dermovate over the counter?

You cannot buy Dermovate over the counter in the UK because it’s a prescription-only medicine. However, you can request to buy Dermovate online from UK registered online doctor services like Simple Online Pharmacy. This service is only available to people who have been prescribed Dermovate by their GP or dermatologist previously.

Side Effects

Dermovate Side Effects

If you find your skin condition gets worse, or you develop a general rash or swelling, you should stop using Dermovate immediately and tell your doctor. This advice also applies to people with psoriasis who get raised bumps with pus under the skin after using Dermovate.

Common side effects include a burning sensation, pain, itching or irritation where the treatment is applied. Up to 1 in 10 users may experience these side effects. Less common side effects include skin thinning and blood vessels in the skin being more visible.

See section 4 of the patient information leaflet for a complete list of possible side effects of Dermovate.
