How to use the digital thermometer
Before using your digital thermometer, you should clean the thermometer with cold water and soap and then rinse it. Turn the thermometer on and place the tip under your tongue towards the back of your mouth. Close your lips around the thermometer and wait until your temperature is taken. Then, remove the thermometer and read the LCD display to see your temperature.
If you are using the thermometer under your armpit, you should keep your arm tight against your body to make sure it gives an accurate reading.
As well as being an oral thermometer (or used under the armpit), it can be used as a rectal thermometer to measure rectal temperatures if needed. However, this type of thermometer is not an ear thermometer and cannot be used in the ear canal.
What is a high temperature?
Everyone’s normal body temperature is slightly different and it can vary depending on the time of day. A body temperature above 38C is considered a high temperature and might indicate that you have a fever. If your temperature is above 38C you should call the doctor or use the NHS 111 Coronavirus (COVID-19) service.
If you have symptoms of a fever (feeling hot and shivery) but your temperature is not above 38C, you should still call your doctor.
