Pulse oximeters are medical devices that are clipped to your finger or earlobe and shine a light through your skin. The pulse oximeter measures how much light is absorbed by your blood. The amount of light absorbed is different depending on how much oxygen your red blood cells contain.
Why use a Fingertip Pulse Oximeter?
- Measure oxygen saturation (SpO2) to see how much oxygen is in your blood
- Measure your pulse rate (bpm)
- Get accurate measurements quickly
- Easy to use and not invasive
- Small, light and portable means you can take it with you anywhere
- Automatically powers off after 8 seconds to save battery life
How to use the Fingertip Pulse Oximeter
Before using the finger pulse oximeter you should make sure your hand is warm to the touch. If it is, you should rest your hand on your chest for five minutes before opening the pulse oximeter and attaching it to your finger. Ideally, you should attach it to the finger next to your thumb or your middle finger. Your fingernail should be facing upwards.
Next, simply press the power button on the top of the device to switch it on. Watch the numbers on the display and when they stop changing and stabilise, you can record the pulse oximeter readings. The BPM number measures how fast your heart is beating and the %SpO2 measures how much oxygen is in your blood.
It should not be used on fingers with nail varnish or false nails. This can affect the results of the oximeter.
Healthy Oxygen Readings
Normal blood oxygen levels for most people are between 95% and 100%. However, this isn’t the case for everyone, you should ask your doctor what healthy levels for you should be.
If you notice your blood oxygen levels are below 95% you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. The NHS has published guidance on pulse oximeters in the UK for people recovering from coronavirus (COVID-19). You should report any symptoms, like shortness of breath, to your doctor regardless of your blood oxygen saturation level.
Buying an oximeter in the UK allows for home monitoring of your pulse and blood oxygen levels.
