About Hydromol Ointment

Hydromol Ointment is designed to help treat dry skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis.  Hydromol is a highly occlusive emollient therapy - when applied, it creates a barrier over the upper layer of the skin. This layer has two functions - it prevents further irritation of the skin, and acts to lock in moisture to help skin heal.

Hydromol is free from fragrances, colours and preservatives, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

Hydromol Ointment can be applied to the skin, used as a soap substitute or as a bath additive.

Practical Tips

Dry skin conditions can be difficult to deal with. Follow these quick tips to help make sure your skin is as protected as possible.

Change your environment - dry air can lead to dry skin. A humidifier can help to keep the air from drying out. Be sure to avoid cold air where possible. This can mean staying indoors on particularly cold days, or keeping your skin covered if you do need to head out.
Use a gentle cleanser - many soaps can contain ingredients that cause skin irritation. Avoid soaps containing sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), as this is well known to cause irritation in sensitive skin. Fragrance-free and colouring-free products are often good for sensitive skin types.
Use a soap substitute - in many cases, any sort of soap can be enough to trigger a skin reaction. Some emollient therapy creams, such as Hydromol, can be used as a soap substitute, cleansing the skin while increasing the water content of the skin and preventing hands drying out. Most bath emollients can also be used as soap substitutes.
Avoid hot water - where possible, use warm water rather than hot. Hot water can strip the upper layer of oil from your skin, and can cause irritation to already delicate skin.

FAQ

How does Hydromol work?

Your skin produces natural oils, which sit on the top layer of skin. These oils help to protect your skin from environmental stresses and help keep your skin clean. When these oils are disrupted, such as by excessive hand washing, exposure to harsh chemicals, or other factors, your skin will not retain moisture, drying it out and leading to other conditions.

Hydromol is a barrier emollient. When applied thinly to the skin, Hydromol creates a layer that sits on the upper layers of the skin. This layer helps to protect irritated skin, allowing it to heal, and to lock moisture into dry skin. This makes Hydromol suitable for the treatment of eczema, dermatitis and other dry skin conditions.
