About Orajel Extra Strength
Orajel Extra Strength is a treatment for the temporary relief of toothache. Orajel is beneficial when the tooth is broken or requires a filling. Note that this product is designed as a temporary measure, and should not be used in place of seeing a dentist.
This gel contains the active ingredient benzocaine, a local anaesthetic. Benzocaine provides relief by numbing the area. This prevents the nerves from sending pain signals and thus stops pain in the treatment area. Orajel Extra Strength contains double the amount of benzocaine as other Orajel products, making it perfect for intense toothache. Oragel Extra Strength also contains clove oil, a traditional toothache cure, which acts as an anaesthetic and antiseptic.
Simply place the gel inside a broken or cavitied tooth and experience the soothing numbness of Orajel.

Practical Tips
Toothache can be an incredibly painful experience. When our bodies are injured or infected, the tissue swells up. When a tooth is injured, the nerve tissue can only swell within the confines of the tooth itself, leading to immense pressure on a very sensitive area.
Follow these quick, simple tips to help with toothache, but remember these are only temporary help until you see a dental health expert.
Saltwater rinse - mix warm water and salt (one teaspoon to a glass), and swish the mixture around your mouth, particularly around the sore tooth. This may hurt at first, but you will notice a soothing effect shortly after.
Avoid extremes - hot drinks and cold foods such as ice cream can cause temperature shock. This can make your tooth more sensitive, and increase pain.
Avoid sugary drinks - sugar can create more chances for bacterial growth in damaged teeth. Many sweet drinks are also acidic, which can lead to more pain. Soft drinks often contain caffeine, which can irritate sore areas even further. Where possible, stick to warm water.
Apply a cold compress - an ice pack (even a pack of frozen veg!) can be wrapped in a towel and applied to the cheek to keep the area cool. These shouldn’t be used for longer than 20 minutes at a time. Do not apply ice directly to the tooth, as this can cause more damage and pain.
Choose the right painkiller - anti-inflammatory painkillers can help with swelling in infected teeth. An anaesthetic painkiller such as Orajel can help numb most kinds of pain in a tooth but are not a replacement for dental health care.

FAQ
What causes toothache?
Toothache can have many different causes - from damage to the tooth itself to irritation of the nerve inside the tooth. Most commonly, a cavity formed within the tooth will be the source of pain. These cavities breed bacteria, which can cause inflammation of the nerve tissue within the tooth. As there is no room for the tissue to swell, this puts large amounts of pressure on the already sensitive nerve tissue, creating more pain.
How does Orajel work?
Orajel contains the active ingredient Benzocaine. Benzocaine is a local anaesthetic; it blocks pain signals where it is applied. This makes it perfect for toothache relief temporarily, until you can see your dentist or doctor. Benzocaine is a commonly-used pain relief ingredient, and one of several over-the-counter pain relief treatments.
How long does Orajel last?
Under normal use, Orajel takes roughly 15-20 minutes to start working. The pain relief should last between 2-3 hours, though you may notice the effect is not as strong towards the end of that time.
Please note that Orajel should only be used 4 times in 24 hours. This means you may have periods where you cannot use this treatment. Orajel should not be used for more than 4 days in a row without speaking to your doctor or dentist.
