What is Piriton?

Piriton Allergy Tablets are a fast and effective treatment for hay fever and other allergies. Piriton contains the active ingredient chlorphenamine, an antihistamine that helps reduce the body’s reaction to allergens. 

Piriton prevents and relieves the symptoms of hay fever and other allergic reactions, such as swelling, redness and itching. Piriton tablets are suitable to help treat most forms of minor allergy, including:

• Hay fever and other allergies (pet hair, dust mites and mould spores)
• Nettle rash and hives
• Skin allergies and dermatitis
• Prickly heat and heat rash
• Allergic reactions to food and medicines
• Insect bites and stings

How to take Piriton tablets

This medication is not suitable for children under 6 years of age.

Children aged 6 to 12 years - give half a tablet every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not give more than 6 half tablets in 24 hours.

Adults and children aged 12 years and older - take one tablet every 4-6 hours as needed. The maximum Piriton dosage is 6 tablets in 24 hours.

Elderly - talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication. The elderly are more at risk of side effects from this medication, including confusion. You may need to take a lower dose.

Leave at least 4 hours between doses. Do not use this medicine continuously for more than 14 days without speaking to your doctor or pharmacist.

Does Piriton make you sleepy?

Piriton is a sedating antihistamine. This means it is more likely to make you drowsy than non-sedating antihistamines (e.g Loratadine). Drowsiness is listed as the most common side effect of Piriton.

How long does Piriton take to work?

You should feel the effects within 30 minutes of taking a tablet. The effects of one tablet last for around 4 to 6 hours. Do not take more than one tablet at a time. Do not take more than six tablets in a 24 hour period unless directed by your doctor.

Is Piriteze the same as Piriton?

Piriteze is different from Piriton but both are made by the same company. Both are used to treat hay fever and other allergies but the active ingredients are different. Piriteze contains the active ingredient cetirizine, which is a non-sedating antihistamine.

Piriton Side Effects

You should stop taking Piriton and seek medical attention if you experience any of the following;

• Difficulty urinating
• Liver problems
• Signs of anaemia or unexplained bruising or bleeding
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as skin rashes and difficulty breathing

Very Common (affects more than 1 in 10 patients)

• Drowsiness and sedation

Common (affects between 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 patients):

• inability to concentrate, dizziness, headache, loss of co-ordination
• blurred vision
• nausea or vomiting, dry mouth
• fatigue

Piriton tablets should not be taken if:

• You have ever had an allergic reaction to Piriton, other antihistamines, or any of the listed ingredients 
• You have taken a type of medicine called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) for depression in the last two weeks
• You are taking other medicines containing antihistamines

You should speak to your doctor before taking Piriton if you suffer from certain medical conditions such as liver disease, enlarged prostate, epilepsy, asthma, and very high blood pressure.

Interactions with other medicines

Piriton can interact with a number of other medicines such as phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy). It can also interact with certain medicines for anxiety, sleeping problems, and other antihistamines. Consuming alcohol can increase the risk of experiencing side effects when taking Piriton.
