What is Selsun shampoo?
Selsun shampoo contains the active ingredient selenium sulphide 2.5%. This medicated shampoo is used to treat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Seborrhoeic dermatitis causes an itchy, crusting and greasy scalp due to excess oil.
Selsun is a shampoo that should be used infrequently and is not suitable for daily use.
How does Selsun work?
The active ingredient, selenium sulphide, works in two ways to combat dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. First, it helps to reduce the greasiness of the scalp. Secondly, it helps to slow down the growth of skin cells on the scalp that cause dandruff and flaking. This helps to control the itching and scaling on the scalp.
Selenium sulphide has also been shown to work against certain dermatophytes. These are a group of fungi that can cause skin conditions. One example is Pityrosporum orbiculare, which is responsible for causing a condition called tinea versicolor.
How to use Selsun Shampoo
Selsun shampoo is suitable for adults, the elderly and children over 5 years old. It should not be used in children under 5 years of age.
Before using the shampoo, shake the bottle well. Wet your hair and then massage the shampoo into your scalp to form a lather. Leave the shampoo on your scalp for two to three minutes before rinsing it thoroughly.
The shampoo should be used twice weekly for two weeks and then once a week for the next two weeks. After this initial course of treatment, it shouldn’t be used more often than needed to control your dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis.
See section 3 of the patient information leaflet for further details.
