Insomnia - Practical Tips

Sleeplessness can lead to problems concentrating, short tempers, depression and unhealthy habits. Insomnia is classified as prolonged periods of sleeplessness, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. In chronic cases, it can last for months at a time.

Note that, even if you manage to sleep a few hours a night, it can still be classed as insomnia - the diagnosis is based on difficulty falling and staying asleep, not by total sleeplessness.

By following these simple tips, you can help treat sleeplessness;

Keep regular sleeping hours - varying your sleep schedule can make it much harder to fall asleep. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even if you are not tired, can help attune your body to sleeping at certain times.
Avoid caffeine - caffeine from coffee,soft drinks and energy drinks is a stimulant, meaning it can keep you awake. It can also affect your body’s ability to enter deep sleep. Cutting down on the amount of caffeinated drinks, especially in the evening, can help you sleep easier at night.
Watch your diet - overindulging on food or alcohol may make you feel sleepy, but will disrupt your sleep throughout the night as your body digests it. Make sure to set a time a few hours before bed where you stop eating for the night.
Create a restful sleeping area - your bedroom should be reserved as a place of rest. Sitting in bed during the day or using devices at night can train your body to stay awake in bed. Make sure the lighting and noise levels can be controlled, for instance with a closed door and blackout curtains, to create a peaceful environment.
Make sure your bed is up to the task - Older mattresses may be uncomfortable to sleep on, making falling and staying asleep harder. A new mattress or a change of bed frame for better support can create a comfortable place to rest.
Exercise - light to moderate exercise during the day can help you to feel tired at the end of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise in the evenings, as your body may continue to produce adrenaline and make it harder to fall asleep.
Stop smoking - nicotine is a stimulant, and people who smoke often sleep less and have more disruptions throughout the night. Check our Smoking Cessation section for tips on how to quit.
Try to relax before bed - warm baths, gentle yoga and relaxing music can all help you to create a relaxed mood before bed. Strenuous activity, exposure to artificial light sources (such as screens) and stress can all contribute to being unable to sleep.
Don’t lie awake worrying - if you can’t sleep, lying in bed can sometimes make things worse. Get up, walk around, find something relaxing to do - once you feel sleepy again, try going back to bed.
Meditation and Mindfulness - if you find it difficult to shake the stresses of the day before bed, try some mindfulness techniques - meditation, keeping a diary to plan the day ahead (instead of thinking about it while trying to sleep), and breathing techniques can all help to prepare your body to sleep.

If your lack of sleep is ongoing, and is starting to affect your daily life, try consulting your doctor or pharmacist for alternative treatments.
