What is Voltarol 12 Hour Gel?

The gel is used to provide long lasting relief from pain and inflammation. It helps to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling in various conditions affecting the muscles and joints.

How does Voltarol work? 

The active ingredient, diclofenac, belongs to a group of medicines known as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). This group of drugs includes ibuprofen and naproxen. This group of drugs work by targeting pain and inflammation.

Diclofenac works by penetrating the skin, reaching inflamed areas (such as joints) and reducing inflammation and pain. The gel is a topical preparation which means it is particularly useful because it can be applied directly to the affected area of pain.

Is Voltarol joint pain relief gel effective?

The gel has been shown to reduce swelling, relieve pain, and shorten the time it takes to return to normal function (with sprains for example). One study looking at ankle sprains found that Voltarol significantly improved pain when moving after three days of treatment, compared to placebo. The study also found that ankle joint function was improved within 3 days of starting treatment.

What alternatives are there to Voltarol gel?

Paracetamol tablets can be taken alongside Voltarol gel to help relieve pain. However, you should not use this medicine with other NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen. If you find that Voltarol isn’t effective for you, you can try other topical treatments instead like ibuprofen gel, Movelat gel or Flexiseq gel.

How to use Voltarol 12 Hour Gel

The gel should not be used by children under 14 years old. Before and after applying the gel you should always wash your hands. 

You should apply a small amount of gel to the affected area and slowly rub it into the skin. The amount of gel needed will vary depending on the size of the area of skin you are treating.

The gel can be applied twice a day, preferably in the morning and in the evening.

You should not use this medicine for more than 14 days unless recommended to do so by a doctor. If the pain and swelling doesn’t improve within 7 days, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist for medical advice.

Cautions

This medicine should not be used by anyone under the age of 14 years old. Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to diclofenac, any of the ingredients in the gel, or any other NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen. The gel should not be applied to broken skin, skin that has a rash or open wounds and cuts. 

If you are pregnant, or have new joint pain that isn’t from an injury, you should speak to your doctor before trying this medicine.
