Practical Tips
Low energy levels can be a problem, especially in the fast-paced modern world. Try these simple tips to help refresh and re-energize, alongside your vitamin regiment.
Get more sleep - research agrees that, where possible, you should aim for roughly seven hours of sleep a night. This may mean changing up your schedule, performing the same tasks at the same time to mentally prepare yourself for bed. Limiting your exposure to electronic devices before bed may also help.
Exercise - it is generally accepted that some exercise is good for your general health but it may also help you sleep. By using energy evenly throughout the day, your body can prepare itself to rest more efficiently.
Reduce your stress - when you are stressed out, your body produces cortisol, a so-called “stress hormone” that creates a lot of the physiological elements of stress, including increased heart rate and nervous energy. Mindfulness and meditation techniques can assist with keeping your stress levels down, as can exercise and taking time to yourself. If your stress levels are causing you serious issues, a doctor may be able to prescribe anti-anxiety medications which may help.
Drink less alcohol - while alcohol can have a sedative effect, making you feel sleepy, a “nightcap” before bed will actually reduce the quality of sleep you get. Reducing your alcohol intake will improve your overall health - if you are concerned about your drinking, please check the NHS Alcohol Support service for advice and support.
Stay connected - social isolation can have a deleterious effect on your mental health, leading to tiredness and difficulty sleeping, as well as depression (which can make both these factors worse). Take time to interact with friends and family, or seek out a new hobby that can bring you into contact with new people.
