What is Nexium?
Nexium is a branded version of Esomeprazole. Nexium belongs to a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs work by reducing the amount of gastric acid produced by the stomach. This helps to reduce acid reflux, which is caused by gastric acid leaking out of the stomach into the oesophagus (the food pipe).

Acid reflux is closely related to several lifestyle factors. Therefore, making the following lifestyle changes may help to reduce your acid reflux:
- Lose weight if you are overweight
- Avoid eating late at night or lying down after eating
- Reduce alcohol intake or avoid alcohol altogether
- Stop smoking, or reduce the use of cigarettes if possible.
These changes will help to reduce the relaxation of the muscle at the top of the stomach, which will help to reduce the chance of gastric acid escaping into the oesophagus, where it can cause damage and irritation to the tissue.
