Wegovy 7.2 mg is the highest dose in the Wegovy dosage schedule currently available in the UK. It’s not suitable for everyone, but it is safe and effective for the right candidates for this treatment.
Let’s learn more about the safety profile of Wegovy 7.2 mg.
Why is Wegovy Now Available in a 7.2 mg Dose?
The 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy (semaglutide) was developed to help improve the success of treatment for people who were taking the 2.4 mg dose and had found that their weight loss had stalled, or their hunger was no longer under control. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved this new dose on 6 January 2026.
It’s only recommended for adults with obesity who have previously been titrating up through the doses of Wegovy and have reached the 2.4 mg dose. It’s for patients who can tolerate the side effects well but are no longer getting the results that they want to achieve from the medication.
If you are just starting the Wegovy weight loss injection, you should start at the lowest dose.
The 7.2 mg dose is changing to a single-use pen format. Until now, your 7.2 mg weekly dose has been taken as three 2.4 mg injections in a row. Going forward, your monthly supply will include 4 single-use 7.2 mg pens, with one pen used each week. The medication remains the same; only the pen format is changing.
As with the other doses, it is to be taken at the same time each week.
How Safe is Wegovy 7.2 mg?
The STEP UP clinical trial of the 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy revealed a favourable risk-benefit profile. This is in line with that seen in lower doses of the medication and earlier clinical trials of semaglutide (Wegovy’s active ingredient).
This means that side effects and other considerations associated with taking the medication do not outweigh the benefits seen by patients involved in the clinical trials.
It’s essential to always consult with a licensed healthcare provider before starting any new medication, or before moving on to a new dose. They’ll assess your body mass index (BMI), medical history, medical conditions and current medications before deciding it’s right for you.
They will be able to check that it’s the right step in your treatment journey. And they’ll answer any questions that you may have about either the treatment or side effects.
Safety and Efficacy: Striking the Balance
The purpose of titration is to find the dose of a drug that ensures you lose weight, while also making sure the side effects are manageable. This will enable you to stay on the drug for as long as you need to and make it easier to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.
Studies have shown that people taking Wegovy 7.2 mg can expect to lose an average of 21% of their body weight. This is similar to the results achieved on the highest dose of GLP-1 receptor agonist, Mounjaro. This shows that it is highly effective.
As with lower doses of Wegovy, there are a range of different side effects that you can expect to experience. Some are very common, affecting at least 1 in 10 people, and some are very rare.
Most of the time, these common side effects ease or disappear completely as your body gets used to the medication. However, when you titrate up to the next dose, it’s normal to see a resurgence of these side effects for a short while, until your body adjusts again.
Although, clinical trials did find an increase in reported dysesthesia on the 7.2 mg dose. Dysesthesia is a condition where you feel uncomfortable sensory feelings like burning, tingling, electric shock-type sensations.
If you have any concerns about side effects experienced when titrating up to Wegovy 7.2 mg, speak to your provider or a healthcare professional.
