Propecia contains the active ingredient Finasteride. Finasteride is used for the treatment of hair loss in men, but in higher doses, it is also used to treat enlarged prostate.
Reports suggest that Propecia can temporarily reduce both fertility and libido and it can cause erectile dysfunction. These side effects have not yet been formally studied and confirmed, however there are enough reports to suggest that Propecia may cause these conditions in less than 2% of people. In addition, it is thought that these side effects can continue for a short while after you stop taking Propecia, although they should eventually resolve.
Propecia affects fertility by reducing your sperm count and quality. So if you are trying to conceive, you should avoid taking Propecia during this time. It is recommended that you stop taking Propecia at least one week before you are trying to conceive, although if you have experienced these side effects, it may take a little longer for your fertility to return to normal.
