The majority of side effects associated with Oxytetracycline are mild and will usually resolve as your body gets used to them. If they worsen as you continue to take the drug, then let your doctor know.
The most common side effects are: abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea and headaches. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding spicy foods and using a painkiller can all help to deal with these side effects individually. If side effects continue, speak to your doctor.
It is also possible that the drug will make you photosensitive, this means that your body will react painfully to sunlight. If this or any other side effect not listed here occurs, then let your doctor know. There are many other potential side effects, but they are all quite rare. If you believe you are experiencing any unusual side effects, or an allergic reaction, stop taking Oxytetracycline and seek medical attention.
How does Oxytetracycline interact with other medical conditions?
There are certain medical conditions that people may have that this drug will interact badly with. You should let your doctor know if you have a serious medical condition or if you are receiving any other treatment. It’s possible that your condition will require a different medication to be used in the place of Oxytetracycline.
This drug can exacerbate any kidney or liver problems you may have. It may also cause birth defects in developing foetuses. Even breastfeeding women should not take this drug due to the potential risks it creates for the developing child.
If you have had an allergic reaction to any medication in the past, you should let your doctor know before taking this drug. It would help if you also told your doctor about any medications, herbs or other treatments you use before starting on Oxytetracycline.
What will happen if I change my dose of Oxytetracycline?
If you use Oxytetracycline the wrong way, you can cause other unwanted effects. Taking too much of the drug or using it without a doctor’s advice is very dangerous, and it can exacerbate the potential side effects. It can also worsen many medical conditions for which you are receiving treatment.
Using too little of the drug can render your dosage ineffective and can cause your body to adapt to it in such a way that it no longer affects acne or infections.
If you miss a dose of Oxytetracycline, do not attempt to take a double dose when it comes time for your next scheduled one. You can make up the missed dose if you remember that you missed it shortly after you were scheduled to take it, but never double up your doses.
If you remember that you missed a dose and it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, simply forego the missed dose and take your regularly scheduled dose.
If you have any concerns about this drug, either before or after taking it, consult your doctor for advice.
