Mounjaro is a revolutionary new weight loss injection from Eli Lilly. Mounjaro uses the active ingredient tirzepatide, which is a GLP-1 agonist medication – it replicates the action of a hormone in your body (glucagon-like peptide-1), which is released after you have eaten food.

This hormone helps to control satiety – the feeling of “fullness” after you eat. It not only makes you feel fuller (even when you eat less food), but it also slows digestion, allowing you to draw more nutrients from your food and keeping you fuller for longer.

Originally developed to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels, this injection can result in weight loss when combined with diet and increased exercise.

Each Mounjaro pen comes with 4 doses, and there are particular storage requirements for this medication. The best way to do this is to store your Mounjaro pen in the fridge when it is not in use.

Does Mounjaro Need to be Refrigerated?

Mounjaro is a “fridge line” product as the manufacturer recommends storing Mounjaro between 2°C and 8°C before first use. When delivered, your order should be kept cold (here at Simple Online Pharmacy, we use WoolCool packaging; an environmentally conscious form of packaging, designed to keep your medication cool while using less plastic).

While Mounjaro can be kept outside of this temperature range, it is not recommended. You can store Mounjaro at room temperature (no higher than 30°C) for 30 days after first use; after this, the pen should be discarded.

Not only does this shorten the shelf-life of your pen, but it can also lead to more complications if you cannot guarantee the temperature does not go over 30°C. Mounjaro that goes above 30°C or if frozen may denature – the molecules may change shape or break apart, making them unusable for their intended purpose. Put simply, the medication may not work as intended, if at all.

This small leeway can allow you to travel with Mounjaro in hand carrier luggage. If you have any doubt that the temperatures will be above 30 degrees whilst you are travelling or if you have a new pen we recommend using a cool pack or similar travel-sized option to keep your Mounjaro at a safe temperature.

Importantly, you should also protect it from light; UV rays can cause the medication inside to decay, meaning the fridge is another ideal storage spot to store Mounjaro.

Why is it Important to Store Mounjaro Correctly?

Following these storage requirements is vital for a number of reasons.

Mounjaro, exposed to a higher temperature, may begin to break down. Once it starts to denature, you cannot be assured that the strength of the dosage is correct; similarly, if it is stored too cold, the medication may freeze, which can damage the pen itself, as well as the quality of the medication. Freezing can lead to the breakdown of the ingredients, damage to the pen or even injury if injected.

When storing Mounjaro, you should ensure it is kept out of sight and reach of children. Not only is the medication itself dangerous for children to take (as they may experience far more severe side effects than adults), but Mounjaro pens have a needle attached (though this should be removed after each time you use the pen).

As with all medication, you should check the expiry date on the packaging before using your product; do not use this product past the stated expiry date. The expiry date refers to the last day of the listed month.

If you notice your Mounjaro pen is damaged, or that the medication inside the pen has particles inside it, or is cloudy or discoloured, do not use the medication.

When disposing of this medication, you should ensure not to throw it away with household waste or wastewater. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for more info on how to dispose of this product. Similarly, when disposing of used needles, please make sure to use a sharps bin, to help prevent others from being injured.

Following these steps can help to ensure your use of Mounjaro is safe and effective, and that the medication remains fit for use.
