Can you switch from Wegovy to Foundayo?

You cannot switch from Wegovy to Foundayo in the UK yet, because Foundayo has not yet been released int he UK. Foundayo (orforglipron) is a once-daily weight loss pill made by Eli Lilly. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved it for UK sale on 10 August 2026 for weight management. NHS funding depends on a separate review by NICE, the body that decides whether a treatment is good value for the NHS.

Both Wegovy and Foundayo are GLP-1 weight loss medications that copy a hormone your gut already makes. The hormone tells your brain you feel full and helps you lose weight. But they differ in their active ingredients.

Wegovy contains semaglutide and comes from Novo Nordisk. Foundayo contains orforglipron and comes from Eli Lilly.

The general approach to switching between GLP-1 medicines is already well established. The switch from injectable Wegovy to Foundayo is expected to be similarly straightforward. You would not normally need a break between the two.

How long should you wait after your last Wegovy injection?

You are unlikely to need a long washout. Starting Foundayo a week after your last Wegovy injection is the expected approach. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in the Wegovy injection, leaves the body slowly.

It stays in the circulation for about seven weeks after the last 2.4 mg dose. The Wegovy injection’s product information sets this out.

That slow Wegovy clearance keeps your appetite controlled while a new medicine builds up. You do not need to wait weeks with no medicine at all.

Based on other GLP-1 switches, you would likely start the Foundayo pill seven days after your last injection dose. On the day your next injection would have been due, you take your first tablet. Stopping Wegovy for Foundayo this way keeps cover steady from one medicine to the next.

No official UK switching protocol exists yet, however. Your prescriber will confirm the exact timing once Foundayo is available here.

What dose of Foundayo do you start on?

Your Foundayo starting dose is not settled yet. It may be a clinical decision rather than an automatic return to the lowest step. Foundayo and Wegovy are different molecules, so there is no exact dose match between them.

Foundayo has its own licensed schedule, set out in the US prescribing information, while UK details are pending. It runs from 0.8 mg up to 17.2 mg once daily, with at least 30 days at each step.

For a switch, providers may match your current Wegovy dose to a sensible Foundayo starting point. This means most people would not restart at the lowest dose. No official conversion exists yet, so your prescriber would set and review this once Foundayo reaches the UK.

You still move up to higher doses through the dose escalation, after at least 30 days at each strength. Moving up gradually keeps side effects like nausea manageable.

Foundayo is simple to take at any time of day, with or without food. You do not need to fast beforehand. The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) follows stricter rules.

You take it on an empty stomach and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking. As a daily pill, Foundayo drops both rules and fits around your routine rather than a weekly injection schedule.

Will you lose your weight loss results during the switch?

You may feel a little more hunger for a few weeks as the Foundayo dose builds. Most people keep their weight off when they manage the switch well.

While your Foundayo dose settles, you may get less appetite control than your full Wegovy dose gave. For some, hunger eases within a few weeks as the dose builds. For others, appetite returns a little before it steadies again.

No head-to-head trial has compared the two medicines directly, so their figures are a guide rather than a guarantee. The Wegovy injection produced around 15% loss of body weight in the STEP 1 trial. Foundayo reached roughly 11% at its highest dose in the separate ATTAIN-1 trial, a little below the injection. Both trials ran for similar periods of about 16 months.

Who cannot take Foundayo?

Foundayo’s US label rules out anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer and anyone with MEN 2. MEN 2 is a rare inherited condition linked to that cancer. The restriction is a precaution: other GLP-1 medicines caused thyroid tumours in animal studies, and whether people face the same risk is unknown.

Due to this risk we would not prescribe any GLP-1 to patients with medullary thyroid cancer, anyone with MEN 2 or any active cancer, Foundayo is likely to follow this pattern.

When should I see a doctor?

Contact the right service quickly if side effects change, because GLP-1 medicines can occasionally cause serious problems.
