What should I do if I miss a Wegovy pill?
If you forgot to take your Wegovy pill, skip the missed dose and take your next pill the following morning at the usual time.
The prescribing information sets one simple rule for a missed dose: skip it, then carry on as normal. Do not double up and take two tablets in one day.
Travel or a change in routine makes no difference, and the same rule still applies. Missing a dose is frustrating, but one skipped morning is unlikely to undo the progress you have made in losing weight.
A steady routine makes a missed dose less likely, so it helps to know your Wegovy pill dosage and stick to the same timing.
Can I take a missed Wegovy pill later the same day?
No, taking a missed Wegovy pill later the same day will not work well.
Oral semaglutide only absorbs properly on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. The studies behind its dosing show why the timing matters so much. Swallow the Wegovy tablet whole as soon as you wake, with no more than about 120 ml of plain water. Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink, or take any other medicine.
Once you have eaten or had a coffee, a dose of Wegovy taken later is unlikely to absorb meaningfully. Wait and take your next pill the following morning. Getting this timing right is part of how to take the Wegovy pill.
Does the advice change depending on my Wegovy pill dose?
No, the missed-dose advice is the same for every Wegovy pill dose. Skip the missed pill and take the next one the following morning. This applies whether you are on a low starting dose, a higher dose, or the full 25 mg maintenance dose.
Will missing one Wegovy pill affect my weight loss?
No, missing one Wegovy pill dose will not noticeably affect your weight loss. Semaglutide, the active ingredient, leaves the body slowly. Research into how the body handles oral semaglutide explains the slow clearance. About a week after a dose, roughly half of it is still working in your body.
Most people notice no change in hunger or fullness after a single missed Wegovy pill. After four to five weeks of daily dosing, the medicine has built up to a steady amount in your blood. One skipped day causes only a small, brief dip. Your appetite control returns to normal as soon as you take your next scheduled dose.
Can one missed Wegovy pill dose cause weight regain?
No, a single missed Wegovy pill dose will not cause weight regain. Weight regain follows weeks off the medicine, not one missed morning. Wegovy works as a long-term weight loss medication, and a single gap in the routine does not reverse your results.

What if I miss several Wegovy pill doses in a row?
If you miss more than a few days of your Wegovy pill in a row, contact our clinical team before you restart. A single missed day is minor, but a longer gap behaves differently. After several days without a dose, semaglutide clears from your body, and your usual appetite control begins to fade. In practice, people who miss several days often tell us hunger returns before they see any change on the scales.
Restarting at your full dose after a long break can mean you experience side effects, such as nausea. This happens because your body may have lost some of the tolerance it built up over your first few weeks. After more than a week without taking oral Wegovy, speak to us before restarting. Some people do better stepping back to a lower dose first.
What if I accidentally take two Wegovy pills?
Taking two Wegovy pills by accident is more likely to cause stronger side effects than serious harm.
Expect more of the usual gut symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea. These can hit harder and drag on because your body clears semaglutide slowly. A double dose needs no antidote. The prescribing information says to manage it by easing the symptoms, not with emergency treatment.
Do not take another pill the next day to even things out. Drink plenty of fluids and go back to your normal once-daily routine the following morning. Watch for signs of dehydration, such as feeling unusually thirsty or dizzy. Get medical advice if the symptoms turn severe or if you cannot keep fluids down.
Is every-other-day dosing an option for the Wegovy pill?
No, the Wegovy pill is a once-daily weight loss treatment. No trial has tested or recommended every-other-day dosing. Taking the Wegovy pill every other day is not a recognised dosing schedule, so we would not advise it. Spacing your doses out does not stretch a prescription or ease side effects safely.
Daily dosing is what keeps semaglutide working steadily. Taken every other day, the Wegovy pill delivers less semaglutide than the daily dose your treatment is built around. Your appetite control and weight management would likely suffer as a result. If side effects are making daily dosing difficult, we would rather adjust your dose than have you alternate days on your own.
How is this different from missing a Wegovy injection?
The main difference is timing — a daily Wegovy pill vs once weekly injections.
Both contain the same GLP-1 receptor agonist, semaglutide. Oral Wegovy starts at 1.5 mg through to 25 mg for maintenance. The pre-filled Wegovy pens start at 0.25 mg and build up to a 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg maintenance dose. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has also approved a higher dose of 7.2 mg weekly for adults with obesity.
Missing a Wegovy injection removes a whole week from the dosing cycle. Missing a Wegovy pill usually means only one skipped morning.
For most people, that shorter gap has far less impact. If you take the injection rather than the tablet, the rule for a missed Wegovy injection dose is different. It depends on how close your next dose is.
When should I see a doctor?
Most missed-dose situations do not need a doctor, but some symptoms always need urgent attention while you’re on the Wegovy pill.
Contact our clinical team if any of the following apply after a missed or resumed dose:
- you have missed several days and feel unsure about restarting your Wegovy pill.
- you experience side effects such as nausea after going back to the Wegovy tablet.
- you have any questions about your dose schedule or next steps.
Call your GP or NHS 111 on the same day if you notice either of these:
- yellowing skin, or severe pain in the upper-right side of your tummy, which can signal a gallbladder issue.
- vomiting that stops you from keeping fluids down for more than 6 hours
- a lump in your neck, a hoarse voice, or trouble swallowing that will not settle. You may need a thyroid check.
- symptoms that worry you and clearly need same-day medical advice.
Stop the Wegovy pill and call 999 or go to A&E if you notice any of these:
- severe stomach pain that spreads through to your back, a possible sign of pancreatitis.
- a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of your face or throat or sudden trouble breathing.
- dizziness, confusion, or dark or unusually little urine. These symptoms point to serious dehydration.
- sudden blurring or loss of vision in one or both eyes. Go straight to A&E. Semaglutide is linked to a serious eye condition called NAION, in rare cases. It can lead to sudden and often permanent sight loss.
- thoughts of harming yourself. In this case, go to A&E and ask for the CRISIS team.
Key takeaways
- Skip a missed Wegovy pill dose and take your next tablet the following morning at the usual time.
- Never double up: two pills in one day will not help and can make side effects worse.
- One missed day has minimal effect because semaglutide stays in your body for about a week.
- If you miss several days in a row, speak to us before restarting your oral Wegovy.
- Every-other-day dosing is not a tested or safe way to take this weight loss medication.
