Wegovy is a new weight loss medicine about to be released to the UK. It was approved by the food and drug administration (FDA), in the US in late 2021, marking the first medication approved for chronic weight management since 2014. The UK has not been far behind with regulators approving the injection in early 2022, with a release to the public sometime in early to mid-2022.

About Wegovy
Wegovy is a weight loss injection containing the drug Semaglutide. This was previously only used in patients with type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide (Ozempic) has now had its strength and formulation modified to 2.4 mg to create a once-weekly weight loss therapy.
Wegovy will be available on prescription to those with obesity (body mass index BMI of over 30) or overweight (BMI of over 27) with certain medical conditions or weight-related health problems. BMI is a measurement of body weight compared to height and can be found using a BMI calculator.

Semaglutide is known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It regulates the area of the brain that controls the feeling of being full and appetite. By controlling how full you feel, Wegovy can effectively lower the desire to eat food, leading to a lower calorie intake and weight loss.

Wegovy Price
The creator of the new weight loss injection Novo Nordisk has not yet revealed the price for Wegovy planned for the UK. The only indication of price so far has been rumours that it will be similar to their other weight loss injection Saxenda. Is Wegovy Safe?
All medicines must go through heavy testing in order to become registered in the UK and most other countries. This does not mean they do not have risks or side effects, but it does mean that these risks can be managed and monitored.
The more common side effects found by the trials were nausea, gastrointestinal upset and diarrhoea. Only 6.8% of those on the treatment stopped due to side effects.
Are Wegovy and Saxenda the same?
No, but they are similar. They are in the same family of drugs and work in a very similar way however with Wegovy, they have managed to improve the overall results while making it easier to use.
As Wegovy is made by the same drug company as Saxenda, it’s left many wondering, what are they going to do with Saxenda?
The clinical evidence now indicates that Wegovy is more effective and easier to use. With this said, Saxenda is still effective for weight loss and Novo Nordisk will NOT withdraw Saxenda from the UK, leaving patients with the option to discuss either with their doctor.
