What is Cilique?

Cilique is an oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. Cilique is a combined oral contraceptive pill meaning it contains 2 active ingredients, 250 micrograms of norgestimate and 25 micrograms of ethinylestradiol. These hormones are very similar to those made naturally by the body that regulate the female reproductive and menstrual cycle.

How does Cilique work?

The hormonal contraceptives norgestimate and ethinylestradiol work in 3 different ways to provide protection against pregnancy.

  1. It prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation)
  2. It thickens the fluid in the cervix preventing sperm from reaching an egg (fertilisation)
  3. It thins the lining of the womb to prevent an egg from attaching to it if ovulation and fertilisation does occur

This makes combined contraceptive pills like Cilique over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy if used correctly. Cilique effect, like other contraceptive pills, is reversible and fertility will return to normal once you stop taking the pills.

How to take Cilique

Take ONE pill at the same time each day for 21 days consecutively following the marked days of the week. After 21 days, take a 7-day break in pills. During this 7 day break, a withdrawal bleed will occur (generally after a couple of days) which is similar to your period but not quite the same. Always start taking Cilique again after the 7-day break even if you are still bleeding to maintain protection from pregnancy.

You will not need to use extra contraception during the 7 pill-free days as long as you have taken your previous pills correctly and start the new pack on time.

If you experience any vomiting or have severe diarrhoea you may need to follow the missed pill information as absorption of Cilique can be affected.

Missed pills

If you forget to take your Cilique pill you may or may not be covered depending on how many pills you miss and when. If you are ever unsure if you are covered, use additional contraception and refer to the full patient information leaflet.

Missing one pill or starting your pill one day late will not reduce contraceptive cover. Missing more than one or starting more than one day later may affect your cover.

If you are LESS than 12 hours late for your dose, take your pill as soon as you remember and then your next pill at your usual time. If you do this your protection from pregnancy should not be reduced.

If you are MORE than 12 hours late or miss multiple pills, take a pill as soon as you remember but your protection is likely reduced. This means you will need to used additional contraception  (such as condoms) for at least 7 days while you keep taking pills.

If you struggle to remember to take your pills on time, setting reminders on your phone or one of the many free phone applications for pill reminders may be useful for you.

FAQ

What type of pill is Cilique?

Cilique is a combined oral contraceptive pill that contains a similar synthetic version of 2 naturally produced female reproductive hormones.

Can I buy Cilique online?

Yes, provided the online doctor service you use is registered in the UK, you may request your pill online and have it sent to you. You must complete an eligibility assessment that is checked by a UK doctor in order to place your request.

Can I buy Cilique over the counter?

No, Cilique is a prescription-only pill in the UK. To get a prescription you must consult a UK registered doctor online or in person. This way the doctor can ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

Do I still need to use a condom with Cilique?

Cilique is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. If your partner's sexual health (STI) status is clear, then a condom is not needed. If you are unsure about your partner's sexual health, use a condom as Cilique will not protect you from STIs.

What happens if I miss my Cilique pill?

Depending on when and how many tablets are missed will determine whether you are still protected. If you miss more than one pill or take it over 12 hours late, it is recommended to use additional contraception for 7 days. Refer to the patient information leaflet or your health professional for more information.

Info Leaflet

Before using any medicine, it is recommended that you read the patient information leaflet.

Warnings

Warnings & Precautions

There is a slightly increased risk of blood clots and certain cancers with contraceptive pill use. The risk for developing a blood clot rises from 2 in 10,000 women to 5-7 in 10,000 women. Doctors access your risk of developing clots before you are given a prescription for the medicine to minimise the risk. Although the chances of a clot are slim, it is important that you recognise the signs of a blood clot, stroke and heart attack. These signs can include unexplained pain or swelling, difficulty speaking, unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain and weakness on one side.

It is important that you receive cervical and breast cancer screenings annually while taking the pill.

While Cilique will prevent pregnancy, it will not prevent sexually transmitted infections. If you are unsure about the sexual health of your partner, always use additional barrier protection.

For additional warnings about the medicine, refer to the patient information leaflet.
