What is Logynon?
Logynon is a contraceptive pill. It contains two types of female sex hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. The two ingredients are:
- Levonorgestrel
- Ethinylestradiol
Logynon is a type of pill called a combined oral contraceptive pill (COC). This is because it combines both types of hormones in one product. Logynon is taken each day for 21 days, followed by a 7-day pill-free break.
With any medication, there are risks involved, and so you should have all your regular check-ups with your own GP each year, to ensure it is safe to continue taking Logynon.
How does it work?
Logynon works to prevent pregnancy in three different ways:
- It thickens the fluid in the uterus, making it harder for sperm to enter the womb
- It prevents the lining of the womb thickening enough for an egg to grow in it
- It prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg
When taken correctly, Logynon is an effective method of contraception. Logynon can make your menstrual cycle regular and your periods lighter and less painful.
Dose
Logynon contains strips of 21 pills marked with the days of the week. There are three different colours of tablets in the strips. One Logynon pill should be taken each day. Start by taking pill number 1 and follow the direction of the arrows on the strip until you have finished all 21 tablets.
After you take one tablet each day for 21 days, you should stop taking the tablets for 7 days. You are still protected from pregnancy during this period and you should have a withdrawal bleed during this pill-free period. After the 7 day break, start the next strip of Logynon immediately.
Alternatives
A number of alternative contraceptives are available. Different types of contraception include:
- Progestogen-only pill, sometimes called the ‘mini pill’ (e.g Cerazette)
- Contraceptive implant

FAQ
What are the side effects of Logynon?
Some common side effects of Logynon include:
- Nausea
- Weight gain
- Painful or sore breasts
- Stomach aches
- Mood swings or depressive moods
- Headaches
If these side effects are uncomfortable or persist, discuss them with your doctor. A full list of side effects can be seen in the patient information leaflet.
Is Logynon a good pill?
How effective and safe Logynon is depends on a number of factors that your doctor will consider before prescribing the contraceptive pill. For most people, the combined contraceptive pill works best.
For those who are over 35, smoke, suffer from migraines or have other risk factors your doctor will check, the progestogen-only pill (POP) may be more suitable.
Can you get pregnant if you miss one pill?
This depends on how long has passed since you should have taken a dose.
If you were due to take your dose less than 12 hours ago, you should take the missed dose straight away. You should then take your next dose at the usual time, even if this means taking two pills in one day. The contraceptive effect of Logynon should not be reduced.
If you were due to take your dose more than 12 hours ago, consult section 3.3 of the patient information leaflet as the contraceptive effect of Logynon may be reduced. Further information can also be found on the NHS website.
What is the difference between the combined pill and the mini pill?
The progestogen-only pill (POP) is sometimes called the ‘mini pill’. The combined pill contains two types of female sex hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. The difference is that the POP only contains a progestogen hormone. This means that they generally do not have oestrogen side effects.
