What is Oestrogel?
Oestrogel pump pack is a prescription-only medicine that is used for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The active ingredient is Estradiol 0.06%, which means it’s a type of HRT called oestrogen-only HRT.
Oestrogel is a HRT gel that can be used for oestrogen deficiency in women after reaching the menopause and also used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of experiencing osteoporosis.
Oestrogel is an oestrogen gel that is applied topically once daily.
How to use Oestrogel
Oestrogel is packaged in a pump pack. Each pump actuation is one dose, which provides 1.25g of Oestrogel. Oestrogel is used once daily on a continuous basis. The usual starting dose is 2 pumps once daily but this can be increased to 4 pumps once daily if advised by your doctor. The lowest effective dose should be used.
Before using Oestrogel for the first time, you should first remove the cap from the canister. Then press the plunger down a few times until the gel comes out. Discard this first dose of gel, then your pump is ready to use.
Apply the gel to clean, dry and unbroken skin. The gel should either be applied to the outer arm or the shoulders of both arms, or to the mid-inner thigh of both legs. It should not be applied near the breasts or the genital area.
Leave the gel to dry for 5 minutes before covering the area with clothes.
How does Oestrogel work?
During the menopause, the amount of oestrogen produced by the body decreases. This can cause many menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. Oestrogel works by replacing the oestrogen in your body. This helps to keep your oestrogen levels similar to what they were before the menopause.
Oestrogel is an oestrogen-only HRT. This means only women who do not have a womb should use it by itself. Women with a womb should only take this medicine with a progestogen-containing medicine.
Oestrogel alternatives
There are several HRT medicines that are available to treat menopausal symptoms. Some of these are oestrogen-only HRT products such as Elleste Solo and Estradot. Other forms of HRT contain oestrogen and progestogen. These are known as combined HRT products. Examples include Elleste Duet and Evorel Conti.
Oestrogel side effects
Like any medicine, Oestrogel can have side effects. Common side effects include headaches, nausea and abdominal pain. Read the patient information leaflet for more information.
The risk of womb cancer for women not taking HRT means that 5 women in 1000 will be diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 65. In women who take an oestrogen-only HRT (like Oestrogel) the risk is between 10-60 women in 1000 will be diagnosed. Taking a progestogen alongside oestrogen helps to protect women from this extra risk. For this reason, it is crucial to take a progestogen with Oestrogel if you have a womb.
There is evidence to suggest HRT use increases the risk of breast cancer. The extra risk depends on how long HRT is taken for. The risk of breast cancer returns to normal within a few years of stopping treatment. Evidence suggests there is little or no increased risk for women taking Elleste Solo who have had their womb removed.
The risk of blood clots in HRT users is up to 3x higher than in non-users. The risk is highest during the first year of treatment.
The risks of taking HRT may be different in women who have an early menopause. If this is the case for you, you should discuss these risks with your doctor.
Patients should be routinely monitored by their doctor during HRT treatment.
The NHS website contains information on the symptoms of blood clots, breast cancer, endometrial cancer and stroke as well as information on the risks of HRT.
Warnings
It is not suitable for everyone to take. This includes women with a history of certain cancers such as breast or womb cancer. For more information, see section 2 of the patient information leaflet.
