About Qvar
Qvar is a steroid inhaler used in the treatment of asthma to help improve asthma symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath. Qvar is a preventer inhaler and should be used regularly for maximum benefit. The active ingredient is beclometasone dipropionate.
It is available as two strengths: Qvar 50 inhaler and Qvar 100 inhaler. Although other inhalers, like Clenil, contain the same active ingredient, Qvar is more potent than other inhalers because it contains extra-fine steroid particles.
How does Qvar work?
Using inhaled corticosteroids such as Qvar, Clenil, Flixotide, Pulmicort, Seretide or Symbicort will reduce the inflammation in the airways of your lungs. They also reduce the hyper-reactive response of the body to allergens. By doing so, steroid inhalers help to improve your asthma in the long term.
Reliever inhalers (like Ventolin) can be used to improve symptoms like wheezing in the short term but they cannot treat the inflammation in the lungs. This is why taking your steroid inhaler is important, reducing the inflammation in your lungs has long-term benefits.
How to use your Qvar inhaler
There are different types of Qvar inhalers: Qvar inhaler, Qvar auto haler, and Qvar easi breathe. They all work in slightly different ways and it’s important to know how to use the inhaler you have been prescribed. Click on the name of your inhaler above to see an Asthma UK video discussing how to use it.

Side Effects
Qvar Side Effects
Commonly reported side effects include taste changes, a sore mouth or thrush, hoarseness, and a sore throat. Oral thrush is a very common side effect of steroid inhalers. One way to reduce the chance of this happening is to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after using your inhaler.
Other side effects are more rare but you should be aware of these. See the patient information leaflet for further information.
Stop using your inhaler and tell your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital if you notice any symptoms of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, face or neck leading to breathing problems; skin rash or hives). This is a very serious but rare side effect. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.

Warnings
Warnings
You should not use a Qvar inhaler if you are allergic to beclometasone or any of the ingredients in the inhaler. If you are suffering from a sudden attack of breathlessness or wheezing, you should use your reliever inhaler (like Ventolin) to improve your symptoms quickly. Using Qvar in this situation will not improve your symptoms quickly.
When using a preventer inhaler, you should monitor your asthma to make sure it isn’t getting worse. If you notice your asthma is worsening or not improving, you should contact your doctor for a stronger dose or a different inhaler. If you notice any symptoms of an asthma attack at any point, seek medical attention immediately.
