What is Betacap?
Betacap scalp solution is a medicine used to treat psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and eczema on the scalp. The active ingredient of the scalp treatment is betamethasone valerate 0.1% which is a topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and irritation of skin conditions. Betacap is specifically formulated for use on scalp conditions that are difficult to treat with traditional cream and ointment treatments.
How does Betacap work?
Betacap works by reducing the scalp inflammation caused by skin conditions through the active ingredient betamethasone. Steroids, like betamethasone, do this by preventing the body from attacking the skin by calming the immune systems inappropriate response in the affected area.
Once the inappropriate immune response is calmed, the body can then begin healing the skin on the scalp, returning it to health.
The lotion component of the medicine also acts as an antiseptic to prevent infections and a moisturiser to improve the comfort of the scalp and by reducing dryness.
What is Betacap used for?
Betacap scalp application is used for inflammatory skin conditions on the scalp. Generally, these are due to one or more of three conditions appearing on the scalp:
- Eczema - dry itchy skin
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis - scaly itchy patches of skin
- Psoriasis - scaly patches of thickened skin
These conditions result in inflammation of the skin from the immune system attacking healthy skin. You can read more about eczema from our online eczema clinic.
Betacap Scalp Application
Apply the solution to the affected area(s) of the scalp TWICE a day, morning and evening, as directed by your doctor. Do not wash out the lotion, allow it to dry naturally.
The general application instructions are:
- Ensure your hair is clean and dry before applying the solution.
- Hold the bottle upside down over the affected areas and gently squeeze the bottle until the area is covered with a thin layer of betacap lotion.
- Gently massage the solution into the affected areas of the scalp.
- Allow the scalp solution to dry naturally. Do not use a hair drier or towel.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after use.
If you are ever unsure how to apply Betacap, read the patient information leaflet which contains detailed application information or ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Once the condition begins to improve, your healthcare professional may instruct you to reduce how often the solution is applied. Follow the instructions of your qualified healthcare professional.

Does Betacap stop hair loss?
Stopping hair loss is not an officially listed effect of Betacap. It is important to note that inflammatory scalp conditions often leave the scalp itchy. Itching the scalp can damage hair follicles and result in hair loss.
Reducing irritation and itching of the scalp may improve follicle health and help with hair loss. Betacap scalp application has not been proven in clinical studies to stop hair loss.
Betacap side effects
Betacap is a generally well-tolerated medicine by most people however, like all medicines, it does have the potential to cause some side effects. Not everyone will experience side effects from Betacap. If you do, speak to your doctor or health professional.
Some side effects can include:
- Skin irritation
- Pustular psoriasis
- Skin thinning - with long term excessive use on covered skin
- Adrenal suppression - with long term excessive use on covered skin

For a full list of potential side effects and warnings about the medicine, read the patient information leaflet.
Alternative treatments
There are two other major scalp treatments for inflammatory scalp conditions. First is Elocon scalp lotion which uses a slightly different steroid mometasone furoate. This treatment may be suitable for those who do not respond or tolerate Betacap.
The other treatment is Betnovate which uses the same active ingredient betamethasone valerate, at the same strength 0.1%. Betnovate scalp application is made by a different company than Betacap. This may be useful if you are allergic to any ingredient in Betacap scalp application that is not in Betnovate scalp application.
If you are experiencing scalp dryness, dandruff or other scalp problems and would prefer non-prescription options, the following may be suitable:
